hi lads -- i,ve have this 9 month old spaniel to try and train , hes done the basic , sit , stay , heel , all on lead , but when we go out and is let off lead , i,m having hell of a problem to get him to come back to me.

What should i be doing with him at this age , never had a spanny before  , the labs were,nt a problem , but this little cutie :drinks: just wants to hunt and does what he likes ,i am worried he may run off all together on the sent of a rabbit and never come back  .

So i really would like some advice and tips from all you PW spaniel owners .

THANKS

Darren .

Hi Darren,

I did a lot of work with Merlin on recall training, he now will return every time he is called.

Start in the garden where he can't run off. Let him off and let him start playing, then call him by name and by using both hands motion for him to come. If he doesn't then go up to him and poke him (not hard, just to get his attention) and say HOY. then using a treat piece of cheese sausage or biscuit stick it under his nose and and move away. When he starts to come make a fuss of him "Good boy etc" and when you get back to where you first called him get him to sit in front of you and reward him.

I did this about 5 - 6 times a day, whenever he is distracted with something and reward him when he does it right.

I even did it while out walking. If you wnat to use a whistle later on you can intrduce this once you have cracked the basic recall.

You can start by calling him by name and as he turns to come give several short pips on the whistle, ammount is not inportant just be consisitent. I use 4 pips.

Always reward him when he comes to you, and get on at him to get his attention. When I did my obedience training the instructor used a long line and made the distance longer and the distraction greater.

You need to seem more interesting than whatever it is he is doing and he will come and see, and if he knows he will get some food then all the better.

Make the training fun and don't overdo it.
