thinking of starting homeloading

Recommended Posts

hi there, am thinking of having a go at reloading my own 12 bore shells. i was just wondering about a few things....

do i need any sort of specific licence to buy the powder and shot?

is there different kinds of powders and is there differance between them?

is it really cheaper than buying shells?

how much would all of the equipment cost?

how much are the different shot sizes i would be using? (7.5, 6, 5, bb)

thanks for any help provided :)

You can save money on specialist cartridges or on smallbore cartridges. You will pay more to make your own standard cartridges.

As to what powder/shot/equipment you need... decide what you want to reload, find a recipe that suits; and then find out exactly what equipment, powder, primer, wads, case etc you need to produce it.

Is that really true? i was thinking of reloading myself, mainly as a hobby / something to do in the evenings. A bit pointless if it's going to cost more.

If you reload subguages it is reasonable to save money. A .410 only takes 11g of shot at £3.50 a KG, less than 1/2 a gram of powder at £25 a KG, primers for £3 for 100, wads at £10 for 500. Shop price is £6.50 a box upwards. Similar for 20, 28 and 16 bore.

Big advantage is the range you can make. Try buying 16 bore 21g clay carts or 3" 20 bore steel carts, 20 bore 18g ultrafast skeet carts, or 12 bore 36g #4 in fibre, 2 dram 1/2 oz clay loads in blackpowder...

If you want to make 28g #7.5 or 32g #6 shot in 12g Clear Pigs/Eley Firsts etc will be cheaper by a long way.

yep, this about sums up why i reload. just for specialised loads. it costs me a fortune in the longrun, i can always recoup some money if need be by selling the press afterwards, and both my kidneys can be sold.

the big advantage of homeloading, is you can make any load thats available on the comercial market and loads that are unavailable.

if money is a bigger factor than shooting, buy cartridges.

if you want a tinker, have a go, you can quit any time. even stop. if it gets too expensive stop and buy factory. i do both,

in 12gauge, the cost to reload clay shells is expensive. but for shells 36g + the savings are there.

if for me you like specialised shells. just having the ability at arms reach is worth the extra cost.

it wouldnt supprise me if you started reloading exceptional loads straight away. if you are constantly chasing the cheapest shells, then you will never ever see the advantage of reloading. if you want the equivalent to "high performance game" loads, then even these can be reloaded slightly cheaper, cost varies because the lead component varies. the last lot i reloaded £110 per k. just because i got cheap 2nd hand lead.

the only annoying thing at the moment, is i hardly have time to reload. but atleast try to press out 50 or so now and again..
