Bootlegged/Counterfeit Goods

Rather than hijack the eBay/scopes thread, I have started a new one.

The weak point in mentioning bootlegged trainers, is that they are frequently as good as the "real thing".

The profit margin on fashion branded trainers is obscene, as are the working conditions for most of the people that make them.

If I can do Nike, Reebok, Adidas, Umbro and friends a disservice, I will.

Its worth noting there's a world of difference between 'bootlegged' and 'counterfeit'. In general 'bootlegged' goods are made in the same factories that produce the genuine article, they just 'overrun' the order quantity and sell it out the backdoor. To the pacific rim third world manufacturers that's a legit exercise 'cause they get so beaten down on the price from global brands. 'Counterfeit' goods on the other hand are usually those rip off items that simply aren't what they claim to be. Many of the brand name 'bootleg' clothing goods especially trainers are pretty much the genuine article Rolex that you buy for a few quid on the other hand are nothing but 'counterfeit' rip offs but then again you have to be pretty dumb not to know that!

I watched a programme on this a while back. They had two pairs of jeans one by a label and the other copy. The only difference was that one had an extra label on the inside. Not even the pro's could find any discernable differences in quality. Does make you think!

However, the biggest differences were that the copies were made in sweat shops where the staff are paid not even enough for two meals a week. Whereas the official production whilst also being cheap labour offered a more substantial pay. So before you start buying copies just give them a thought.

Recently I have had my eyes opened to this bootlegging buisness. A band that I know suffer terribly from bootlegging. It is not only their music that is ripped off but the logos and artwork.

Just recently we have seen clocks, coasters homemade t-shirts, badges and all sorts of tat. The band would never allow this substandard rubbish and it just tarnishes the name of the band having that rubbish around.

The i.t. section of the website "vero" anything that appears on e-bay that is bootlegged. It is done as ruthlessly as the law allows.

Since I try not to be a hypocrite I have since stopped buying bootleg gear from anywhere and would encourage others to do the same.

Blatent copying reduces the value of the real thing.

On a trip to Bisley of all places, I saw a real AC Cobra, I know what to look for and this was a real 427 Cobra a very rare and desirable car, how p*ssed off must the owner of that car be eveytime anyone asks if it is a kit car or a copy?

Generally I don't buy into the the 'you are only paying for the name' theory, for example, both I and mrs stuartp have quite a few Timberland clothes (bought at dscout outlets I hasten to add) and the quality is outstanding, so much so that that original price tag could definitely be justified. Of course you pay more than you do for other makes but they have to claw some of it back somehow.

The Lotus 7 also springs to mind!

I agree totally with the Timberland issue. I have a few t-shirts from "Leading surfing brands" that were bought at discount stores. I picked them up cheap because they were the prvious years colours/designs and therefore obselete. Some of these shirts are now over 10 years old and still going strong. Quality says it all.

I also have some counterfeit "Lacoste" polo shirts bought in a market in Istanbul (and the crocodile is sewn on) about 12 years ago, worn regularly and still going strong.

The same goes for "branded" trainers.

I think its totally different, when you are talking about cars, specialist clothing and peoples intellectual rights being bootlegged.

However, there are many things out there that are sold on the name, that are not worth the price and the cheaper equivalent is just as good, in my opinion.
