ratboy
Hello people, I'm hoping some of you, 'in the know', can help me out with some advice. I have applied for a shotgun licence having not shot for 25 or so years. I have recently returned from a trip to York Guns, near to where I live and returned with a few questions. I went with a mate who talked me out of buying a Lanber or Bettinsoli saying I'd be better paying more to get a Browning or Beretta. I suppose I can see what he means, they felt alot nicer to hold and open very easily and smoothly and have good reputations for reliability. I really liked the feel of the 686e and the Silver Pigeon. I didn't manage to try a Browning 525 they didn't have one. Please can you tell me what you can about these guns and what price can I get them for new. Is the 686e just a silver Pigeon with different styling. I want to shoot clays initially then find some rough shooting for pigeon and rabbit etc. Do you think a sporter would be what I need. I hope to also get a semi auto some time next year so the O/U would be kept for best / clays after that. Any and all advice will be gratefully received. Also, is there anyone out there who might allow me go shooting with them so I can see how it's done and pick up a few tips etc. I am very very keen and will travel any reasonable distance from Wetherby near Harrogate and York in Yorkshire. Thanks in advance. Al Scott
Poacher
In breif, 686E for clays, Silver pigeon for rough+clays.. You might want to wait to have a feel of the Browning, as alot of people would agrre your either a Beretta person or a Browning person not both. If your going to get a semi-auto later, it maybe worth getting the 686E for the clays and use the SA for rough You can't go wrong with Beretta or Browning.... check on a well known internet trading site for guns for prices this will give you a good indication... Finally make sure the gun fits .....
chrisv
Al, Don't forget there's a competition version of the Silver Pigeon as well as a field version. It's a bit heavier than the game version, it also has Optima barrels and chokes, not sure if the field version does. If you prefer the field type styling that might be the way to go. I think you are correct, the mechanical bits of the Berettas are all the same although some field versions might have an automatic safety catch. "Finally make sure the gun fits ....." Poacher is right, it's important the gun fits, Berettas don't fit me very well, but because I like them so much, I went for one with an adjustable stock. Thanks in advance. Al Scott Hi Mate I have a Silver Pigeon V 20g in my collection and previous to that i had a 12g Sil Pig 3. They are superb. You can not fault them, i know not everyone is suited to Beretta's and as mentioned you really must make sure that it fits you and also that you are comfy with it. I personally prefer Beretta's to any other make, but that is only my view i know some people prefer Browning's. When i got my sil pig i think it cost me around about the £1300 mark new, but when i got rid of it i got a good resell value for the gun. Get some advice from your local gun dealer but sounds like a sporter may suit you. I don't think you will go wrong with one as long as it suit's you. good luck. ratboy
Thankyou so far. I have just had a look on the internet at some pictures of the Sporting Silver Pigeon and it looks very nice indeed, so I'll have to have a look at that too. I can't believe the price differences from dealer to dealer. The 686e has a rrp of £1330. York Guns had it marked up at £1230. I was offered a discount of £95 bringing it down to £1135. Brilliant I thought. Then I looked on the internet and found the same gun, brand new at £1095, not too far away from me. Rang them up and they offered me it for £1050!!!!!! I am amazed. I've seen it second hand on one site for more than that. I wonder if the Silver Pigeon Sporter would also be up for similar discounts as that has the same rrp of £1330. Please keep your thoughts and comments coming as it all makes great reading for me. Thanks again.

Quist
Silver Pidgeon is a nice gun & comes with a set of chokes, key, case etc. Its only ever as good as the guy pulling the trigger so be prepared to spend a lot of time practicing your mount and fit in the clothes that you will be wearing before you buy it. Price isn't everythiong and a good gunshop will fit the gun to you and buy it back off you if you change your mind later. All twelve bores fire more or less the same cartidges. You pay for quality of manufacture and to some extent looks. The better quality the make and model, the higher the resale value if its looked after. Then it was listed at close to £1300, I ended up picking it up locally for £1050 with a slip and earplugs thrown in. Could have found it cheaper, in fact I think the best price I saw was £950 but it was a distance and I wanted to be able to deal with someone local.
