Gun Cabinets

Hi, I hope this is the right section to post in.

I am looking into getting an SGC and one of the first things I need to think about is storage. I assume I will need a gun cabinet (you can't just chain the gun to the wall can you?) but space is tight in my room (my parents won't have it anywhere else). I will only be getting the one gun and ammunition would be stored seperately. I'd only need room for the gun and maybe chokes, cleaning stuff, glasses and ear defenders but only the gun is a requirement.

Are there any slimline gun cabinets for one gun and minimal or no equipment? I'm looking to spend about £100 or less if possible.

Also, can gun cabinets be bolted into the wall horizonatally, above the floor, turning them into a sort of cupboard, with the door opening downwards? I could put the gun cabinet above my draws or bed and avoid taking up any floor space.

If you know of any solutions or paticular cabinets (or ranges/makes of cabinets) that might suit me, please let me know (or better yet, give me a link to wherever they are sold so I can check them out).

Also, how important is it to have the cabinet concealed? That's pretty much impossible for me if it has to be in a cabinet which is bolted to the wall.

Cheers :)

My cabinet is visible and in my bedroom although it has been painted to match its surroundings.

yes the cabinet can be mounted horizontaly long as it is attached to a solid wall (exterior in my case)

i would ask your firearms officer about whether you actually need a cabinet...im sure i have heard that if its just one gun then clamps attached to a solid wall may suffice....but maybe not

hope its been of some help :D

Try the cabinet on its side before you bolt it horizontaly as the weight of the door may be a problem, either to lift up or straining the hinges if it drops down depending on which way you mount it on the wall (hinge up or down). Make room and get the largest and deepest cabinet you can, as you will be suprised how quickly it fills, locking top cabinets allow for storage of shottie kit in the short term and cover you for bolts, mags, and bullets if you ever go for your FAC. It is worth planning ahead.

Try getting your Dad into clay shooting, if he is bitten by the bug it may open some more room in the house. my cabinet is in plain view in the room it is in, but not in plain view of the window, this I found was enough.

Iv got a 3 gun cabinet now and you will be surpised at how thin they are, i thought it would take up alot of room width ways.

In my old house i had a clamp, which comes in 2 parts, the locking bit which goes through the trigger guard and the barrel goes through another bit. drill them into a solid brick wall, cannot be anything else and voila.

They might be abit funny about it being on view though, mine was in a locked wooden cupboard.

I may be able to free up some space by ditching my 'dressing table' (which is used as a TV stand) and move my drawers across. This would give me a spot, out of view of the window, where I could put then gun. I could perhaps use a clamp, but cover it over with a home made cupboard (I'm thinking four bits of MDF, a couple of hinges and a makeshift handle, painted to match the wall). This would be dead cheap compared to a gun cabinet I think. Gun cabinets seem to start at about £75 but I saw a clamp on eBay for a tenner (havn't found any places online selling them in the UK...will most real-world gun shops sell them?). Building the cupboard would cost nothing and is a bit of fun I suppose.

If I don't do this (which is not certain, it would be a right pain changing the room around and I'd lose a lot of storage space) then I think it's either cabinet on the wall (sideways, like a cupboard) in plain sight (which costs a lot) or gun in a clamp on the wall in plain sight. I say 'plain sight' but I have net curtains which are always drawn. When I take them down to be cleaned I shut the regular curtains first (working on the outside of the curtains).

Actually, now I think about it, I might be able to clamp the gun above my drawers (and therefore out of sight of the window) if it was positioned at a 45 degree angle...how long is the average o/u or semi-auto? I'll have a measure tommorow.

One other question: do I need to have a gun cabinet/clamp etc when my house is inspected or do I just say "I'm putting the cabinet here"? It seems silly to shell out for a cabinet or spend time building a cupboard when there's every possibility I'll be turned down.

I don't intend to purchase more than one gun. I will not have the money for the gun itself let alone the ammunition, range fees etc for rifle or pistol shooting. I will be off to university in a year's time so I will either have to sell the gun or keep it at home (since halls of residence will never let me keep a gun) and only use it once in a blue moon, if at all.

How much does the type of shotgun matter when shooting clays? If I bought an Escort designed for hunting, or a Lincoln trap gun, would they still be suitable for skeet and sporting clays and DTL? If I can shoot most clays with one gun to a reasonable beginners level I'll stick with one gun and spend as much as I can afford on it.

Get the biggest cabinet you can.

I went for a 3 gun one and am going to have to put another cabinet in another room now because I can't fit everything in

This time I'm going for a 4/5 gun cabinet :D

Mrs P. may well end up rifle shooting as well :)

Have your cabinet or clamp in place before your FEO visit, he should want to see it if he is doing his job properly. You are trying to prove to a person who has never met you that you are safe to have a gun, so dot the i's and cross the t's or it will cost you time and hassle with your application.

bonne chance

As you state you only want one gun, go with the clamp if your FEO will accept one, ( if you read the HO guidelines to the police you will see that they are acceptable). They used to be under £10 so no problem with cost, if you get keen in years to come and require a cabinet you can dump it. Why not discuss it with your FEO when he makes his visit.

Regarding the type of shotgun, does not matter whether its a double or auto, get what you fancy and fits the best. Most autos are now multi choke which will suit all disciplines or if you get a double barrel make sure the chokes are bored 1/4 & 1/2 (or multi choke) and you will be able to tackle anything.
