old rooster
Farmer was very concerned about the pigeons attacking what is left of his rape so despite not liking pigeon shooting when things are so bad for them I decided to nip over and give it a go. Also gave me a chance to give the new beretta a try out. About a mile from home on one of the back roads I came across a Renault Clio stuck in a snow drift so pulled up to help sort it out. It as driven by a Polish girl who didn't even have a coat let alone a flask of tea, blanket, sandwiches, spare fuel, shovel etc. that we are all told to carry during spells of bad weather. An elderly lady turned up and a sainburys van had to stop the other side of the 100 yard long drift so the driver gave a hand and we eventually got it shifted out of the way. The Pathfinder went straight through and on to the farm once the other vehicles had got out of the way. As usual the zillions of pigeons that had been there when he phoned had disappeared so I suggested that I sell him my car as a pigeon deterrent given that every time I turn up the pigeons have gorn. Eventually decided on a spot which would put a decent hedge to my back to protect from the bitingly cold wind and set up a dozen shell deeks on the field, where most of the snow had blown away. Soon as I had set up a dozen partridge came out of the hedge and started milling about pecking up bits of wheat left from the previous crop. Pigeons came in pretty well and I had a few real cracking shots, as usual they came well for a short while then dwindled off. It was extremely cold so I didn't stay too long, picked up a dozen birds so not too bad given the conditions. Poor old pigeons are well out of condition, I really don't like hammering them when the weather is against them like this but they do a hell of a lot of damage to the crops which have already suffered around here from the dreadful weather we've had.
