painting a shotgun

Don't panic, I'm not talking about getting a rattle can of paint to give a best english side lock that Mad Max look.

I have just got a Mossberg 500 and the reciever is gloss black with a few scuffs and chips here and there. Firstly does anyone know what that finish is (paint, blued or something else) and what would be a hard wearing finish that would give a satin or matt look and can it be done at home or cheaply. I've seen dura-coat on shows like American Gun but dont have access to an air brush.

Just bear in mind This is an old pump gun that cost me £110 so I dont want to throw loads of cash at it when a new one can be bought for less than £400.

cheers

Thanks, I have found your post and the gun looks great. How is the finish holding up on the mag tube?

I think Duracoat is the way to go but £60 on paint? This cheap little fun gun is going to cost me a fortune before I'm done.

i have a old remy 1100 that was looking it,s age. sent the woodwork off to toolazydecoy let him work his magic came back great, he put a black/grey camo on it. still looks great 3yr,s later

The wood will be getting swapped out for a tactical type stock and forend.

The finish is still just as good as the day I sprayed it , with very light marks on the mag tube, I see what you mean about it being a little pricy but with the amount you get in the kit you can definitely do 2 full shotguns (stock & forend as well ) with a little left over

If you go to you tube you can find examples of gun painting.Snipers do it regularly, I painted my rifle for Coyote hunting and many others do as well. We use the cheap method of rattle can matte finish. You can get creative and use 2-3 different shades overlaid and use a stencil or tree branch ,fern, etc. to make a pattern. I painted a Model 700(17 Predator seen in posts) with match stainless barrel and Hogue stock, just a tool made more effective even if less valuable for resale. If you don't like the outcome---paint it some more!!

My old Baikal side by side has its barrels painted in hammerite black and the woodwork painted in dark green hammerite. It looks scruffy as anything (I didn't do it I might add!) but it was dirt cheap and it means I'm not precious if/when I knock it on a tree/catch it on barbed wire etc.
