For a scope you need something dialable that tracks 100% reliably with a lot greater mag 30x mag is usual 18x is about the minimum
coyotemaster
I would have to agree with Kent at least in part, if your primary purpose is long range targets and not carrying it a lot, get more barrel weight-length and a heavier rifle to soak up the recoil. The .308 is an excellent choice in cal along with any 6.5 that is current. Scope wise I make do with a 4.5x14 Variable and it seems to be a good compromise if I decide to use the gun for a hunt. Savage makes a couple of guns designed for long range targets and seem to be quite accurate. Do consider the 6.5 as it will do all the .308 will with less recoil and as accurate all the way out to 1k yards.

Yes but he will be in open F-class with a 6.5 mm not FTR, you know I like it though. it will also be hard to get 6.5mm factory target ammo here and generally more costly, I am thinking beginner ie non hand loader?. TR shooters use no scope at all and some can outshoot f-class guys. I know of one who shoots well with 9x but its best to be in the right field of competition with as many advantages as you can

If you want some fun with target work and then take the rifle out in the field then crack on, if you want serious target work then this isn't really the tool for the job. They are great rifles just the same, many will suggest much better than their new incarnations (they may be right). I don't use strong Mag, I can deal with 6-8x mag out to 500 yards, I may wind it up to 10-12x, but even for me, a fixed 6x scope is not first choice for 600 yards! My target work is a fun and zeroing exercise these days, but if I was serious I would be using higher mag.

Dekers
hi kent .yes im new to full bore so not into hand loading.also wont be doing any comps,so its mainly to practice on the range spot on .target then to field use. just having a look at different options at the minute.maybe a remmy 7oo sps.or tikka t3 varmint That could add some legs to this one! I run a Rem 700SPS in 308, as they stand (or as mine stands) it is plenty good enough for me and delivers 1" with PRVI 150g SP. Other than taking about 3" off the barrel and fitting a P8 mod it is absolutely standard. People will slag these off and tell you to throw most of it away and build a different rifle with what you have left. As a point of interest, for a .308 this is an absolute pussycat to shoot, and its Light, so it suits me! Nothing wrong with a T3 Varmint but it is well known round here I have no time for heavy barrels on rifles for field use, they serve ME no use, and are counter productive through lugging around extra weight, I run a T3 Hunter and T3 Lite, they do what I want! Nothing wrong with that Sako either! My SPS is regularly used at 600yards at Bisley. A V Bull is a V Bull, and whilst I will not get as many as some others there, the satisfaction is probably higher as I had to work a bit harder!
