We have an L series 99 and a TD4 06, the L series seems to eat prop shaft centre bearings but it might be the cheapy bearings, next time will get genuine and see how they do, vcu locked up solid but managed to get a complete prop shaft locally,as Albert said you really need to get your hands dirty and look after it yourself as bits are dirt cheap, invest in a Haynes manual and have fun..................... atb handy

Ok folks, Thats the grand cherokee gone, And i opted for a 2000 model, 2ltr td freelander, So we,ll see how it pans out, I might add,i managed to find a freelander without a sun roof, I hate sun roofs, They always leak

The sunroof leaking is the only problem mine has'nt had.

What I do get is condensation droplets on the plastic that drips onto the seats. This causes water marks on the seat covers mixed with dust and crud(work truck) looks like incontinence.

Watch for odd wear patterns on front tyres indicating seized vcu. This shows as tread blocks forming sawtooth effect veiwed from side.

Good luck.

mine gets water in the boot the bit where the jack goes looks like condensation does anyone know what it is

Mine has a sunroof and a removable hard top looks like the water comes in the hardtop seal whilst driving and fins its way to the lowest point ie the jack well, quick fix is to drill a hole in the boot floor from underneath so you don't damage the carpet.
