mrmints
Firstly, hello to all, my first post after a lot of reading! I'm currently using a single shot moderated baikal shotgun which I use with Eley Hushpower subsonic rounds. One of the farms I shoot on has great potential for pigeon decoying and for this I have decided to buy a Hatsan Escort (money, and a bad experiences with 2nd hand items over the years make this the most suitable for me). I wonder if anyone had any experience of using subsonic rounds with semi autos? The Eley rounds are 32g and 67mm. Are subsonic rounds much quieter when not moderated than standard rounds or is the moderator needed to make a difference? Thanks for your help in advance. sitsinhedges
You wont get the benefit of the quieter cartridge without a moderated gun.
Guest cookoff013
unless you are very lucky you are not going to get a hatstand to cycle subsonics. either you`ll shoot 36g subs or end up hating the shells. i wouldnt even bother using subs in an auto, thats why pumpaction mossbergs get moderated. no cycling issues. worst case scenario you`d probly get 42g loads to cycle, but thats crazy talk. cost you a fortune in powder and lead. not ideal. mr sits is correct. comercial subsonics are not adequate, homeload subs are better. more usable cartridges, more versatile. this has been covered lots. stick with normal loads in the autos. you do not want a blocked barrel and a secondary firing. that will ruin your day,
00buck
Eley huspower are not the best and will not load a hatsan semi auto 20g And are not that good in a hushpower shotgun I use home loads or gamebore hushpower 30g 5 shot they drop the rabbits stone dead
longgun
I am using NS D20 powder mostly. I don't have a subsonic recipe for this powder but Remington Game Loads hull, UEE G-600 primer, 16 Ga Gualandi wad, 1,15 g D20, 32 g shot can cycle my Lumar semi auto. I tried this recipe with Cheddite Hull and 12Ga Gualandi wad and cycled better. One more example; Cheddite hull, G-600, Gualandi wad, 1 g D20, 28 g shot cycling and cycling. I don't know the speeds but I suppose all of these have 1000-1100 fps. I don't want to give or suggest any recipe but want to say that semi autos may cycle with them. As you know old semi autos can cycle more easily. If you can find an old recoil spring you can use it with subsonic recipes.
Dekers
It's already been said, if you are set on a Hatsan, email Edgar Bros FIRST,and ASK them if it will deal with subs, if by any chance they actually say yes, then you have a piece of paper to wave at the dealer when it doesn't and you take it back! mrmints
I think the Hatsan Escort is gas operated? I emailed Hatsan last week asking them if the gun would cycle Eley Hushpower 32g SUBSONIC rounds. I had an email back from Hatsan, not Edgar Brothers and I quote "Yes, it can shoot 32gram shells smoothly" I did go back and say, "even though they're Subsonic and therefore slower burning?", but didn't get a response. I also forgot to mention that these shells were 67mm, not 70mm. However, from what I've been reading on this forum, that shouldn't present too much of a problem. My understanding is that 67mm is as low as you'd want to go in terms of length. Chris I've sent Edgar Brothers a similar message today and will provide the forum with their response as received. sitsinhedges
You'll just have to see. Subsonics don't necessarily have to be low pressure and my 20gauge ones would cycle my 20gauge Teknys but a proper moderated auto would generally have a ported barrel to bleed of the expanding gases into an outer tube in an attempt to reduce the noise and so the pressures within the barrel may not be sustained for long enough for the gun to operate as it was designed to. The answer to some degree would be to have the gas ports opened up to allow more gas to be used to cycle the gun.
