stoogey
hi all, first pst, but i've been following off and on for a while. (it may be a second post yet lol) a question arose about finding rung birds in ferral flocks on a farm, whats to be done about it? years ago i was told by a gun shop owner to send the rings to some place and state 'ferraled' or some such, is this right? thank you. Cranfield
If you look at the feral pigeons in the town square (even Trafalgar Square) you will see that a lot of them are ringed. These are obviously racing, or "pet", pigeons that have gone feral. The general belief is that once a pigeon does not return, the owners are not interested in it. It obviously can't be raced again and won't stay round the dovecote if released in the garden. I would (and do) just ignore the fact they have a ring. If they are feeding with other ferals on the crops, or causing a nuisance round farm buildings and feed stores, they are listed in the General Licence as vermin (with or without a ring). Genuine racing pigeons are easily identified when flying, as they are usually in small groups and fly fast and straight. They also don't stop to eat the farmers crops. There is no excuse for mistakenly shooting those.
tiny tim
just ignore the ring ..I,ve raced pigeons and if there out feeding on the farm they have gone wild and the owner wouldn't want them back for racing anyway

THE AD
On one of the farms we shoot the farmer is into racing pigeons and has lofts on his land that belong to him and other fanciers. On the last day of the last racing season we were out shooting woodies when we got the call "watch out for the racers they are due in soon" an hour later phone goes again "the race is over if any come in now feel free to shoot them". If they come in late after the the race has finished most get stretched anyway.

kaunda
Should a dead racer come to hand, you can find out details of the owner through the website of the Royal Pigeon Racing Association http://www.rpra.org via their Stray Reporting System. Usually reported as ' found dead under a power line ',' found dead by the motorway ' or ,in season, ' found near a sparrow hawk's nest '.
