crieffy
My new shooting buddy I've been shooting for around 25 years here and this is the first time I've witnessed this. I saw the wee polecat heading into what we call a 'plantie crub' (a little stone enclosure for growing cabbage) I went for a closer look and suddenly rabbits came running out in all directions I shot three with the HMR then the polecat came charging out and grabbed one of the rabbits, gave it a good chew and dragged it down a hole. I was about 2 feet away and it wasn't concerned about me at all - got about a minute of video of him too Handy wee fella - hopefully bump into him again some day Oh, and a gratuitous gun pic to reflect on.. pestbry
don't look like a wild polecat to me, its too light in colour. I expect its a feral ferret that someone has lost and is living wild. Great pic of rifle with the reflection from the water as well, nice looking bit of kit Bry
Ferretboy111
Yeah is a ferret!!!! definately!!!! doesnt look old either! Theres no way a wild polecat would let you get that close or look in that good nick! Alex
crieffy
I wasn't sure what to refer to it as There's heaps of these things here all roaming wild, usually see them lying dead on the roads. There's also the white/yellow coloured albino ones.
Ferretboy111
Ferrets then, i bet someone breeds them and lets them run wild or something, or someone just loses loads everytime ferreting! or if they dont work they get realised, its a common thing! Alex Poor little things, atleast that one had the right idea on how to survive

Alex Poor little things, atleast that one had the right idea on how to survive I had to get on google for a look - LINK - apparently they were accidentally or deliberately let loose in the 1980's. They must do pretty well here judging by the amount of roadkills I see - and there's a huge rabbit population for them. He certainly got stuck in to that rabbit - I chucked him in another one too so he won't be going hungry
Frank
Amazing. That is really intersting, to say the least. Thanks Crieffy, for sharing that experience with us. I really did not know feral ferrets existed on shetland. Looks like they are doing very well, judging by the look of the condition of that fella. Frank.
