silenced smoothbore?

Recommended Posts

I find my moderated .410 produces about the same level of noise as my air rifles without their mods. Never played with the moderated 20's.

If you're near Dorset feel free to come have a play with the 410. I find it fine to handle as the mod brings a bit of size and weight to an otherwise 'puny' tool.

Just beware, you can (or used to be able to) buy the mods separately, so there are some poorly done DIY examples out there with 'interesting' barrel porting. That said, whoever built mine did a decent job, even if I've never worked out what brand the foreign gun is!

You can have the best of both worlds if you choose carefully. Despite what is printed on the box some of the heavier 20gauge loads are actually reasonably slow thru a ported fully moderated barrel and therefore don't give off the sonic crack we are trying to avoid. Problem is that various guns are ported to a greater or lesser degree so you have to experiment with the gun you intend to use. My old moderated 20gauge would fire gamebore traditional game 28gram quietly but my new gun that is ported less wont. I believe it will fire lyalvale 32gram fibre in 20gauge quietly though.

Nonetheless a moderated 20gauge wont generally be as quiet as a .410 but it's so much more versatile the extra noise is very much worth it
