optomist
Hi Folks, Does anyone have experience of building eithier of these are there any plans around on internet? Finally had enough of magpies, shot a couple last night with 22lr in field adjacent to house but they have already sused me out and are still stealing eggs from our farm sales stand at a rate. There is no way I can fire anything near to the road to deal with them. Cheers Optomist

optomist
Hi folks, I had a moment of inspiration and have modified one of our smaller mobile poultry pens which means that the call bird gets more space and five star accomodation he is working for me and deserves to be looked after. I have also come up with a variation on the straight stick idea to trigger the flap using an inverted hinge in the middle of two perch sections which is very sensitive and yet strong enough to hold the flap open. I have set the flpa as a side enrtry straight from the ground rather than a fly in from above arrangement and to get the constant steady pressure on the flap i have used a bunge cord. If it works i will post pictures- subject to my technical ability. Do side entry traps work as well as the classic top entry ones? hushpower
There use to be plans for a ladder trap pinned on this site some where ,but seems to have been pulled.
optomist
Quick update, The side entry flap where magpie enters along ground didn't work , so modified it into top entry last night and caught one this morning. Same principle double hinged stick and use bungee cord to vary direction and force on door to fine tune and it works a treat. rjimmer
I put ply over the whole callbird compartment and put a perch in the middle. Stainless steel hinge bar and brass or s/s screws, galvanised nails. Some of my traps are nearly 20 years old.
