ilovemyheckler
I am after some rabbits (in the fur gutted or not gutted) for training my dogs. I don't have any permissions to shoot my own as I have recently relocated to North Scotland. I have asked several local butchers but they say that rabbits aren't in season at the moment. If this is correct when will they be in season? Thanks
Dekers
Season starts Jan 1st and ends Dec 31st. Moorland and unenclosed land is subject to a close season. In Scotland, the occupier of the land or persons authorised by him may kill rabbit throughout the year on moorland and unenclosed land (not being arable) by all legal means other than by shooting, and by means of firearms over the period from 1 July to 31 March inclusive (Section 1 (3) of the Ground Game Act 1880 as modified by the Agriculture (Scotland) Act 1948). EMcC
My Father always said Rabbits were 'in season' only when there was an R in the month. The other months were for them to top up their population. That was in the days when Rabbits were some peoples only source of income, as far as the landowners/Farmers were concerned they were in season all year round !! Gimlet
The butcher may be referring to the ferreting season. He possibly only buys net caught rabbits. In which case the "season" is, roughly, November to March.
