Dunkield
OK so the boy has bought Battlefield 2142 to run on the (my) PC and it runs like a dog. The PC is a fairly decent spec and not lacking in any department, apart from it's gaming ability, so I have borrowed a graphics card from a mate and sure enough that has fixed it. So the question is, what is good, cheap grahics card these days, and where is the cheapest place to buy? [ I have a budget for guns and other fun stuff, but I have never bought anything to do with computing - ever ] The original card was an Ati Fire GL 8800, Spec The loaner is an Ati Radeon 9550 Spec which I believe is now obsolete? The PC only supports AGP, not PCI-E. Any advice will be gratefully received
Hairy Pat
The g-force cards seem to have an edge at the moment, look at the gs cards for reasonable price - performance. For eye candy, upgrade to an pci-e mainboard and go for the higher end cards, the gt and gtx's as they deliver twice the bandwidth of agp 8x. If you are staying with your agp board then stick a gig of memory on it, as this will help keep things moving (sometimes). try this site for reveiws http://www.hexus.net/ Pat

pin
What spec is the motherboard? Make model will do. Not all motherboards are happy with all cards, and some of the more recent cards might not like 2x or 4x agp (they should, not all do). As HP has said, more ram will help, if you have less than 1GB, deffo worth upgrading.
Markio
My ATI 9800Pro died on me a few months ago. I wanted to upgrade but not spend silly money has the main board is a few years old and AGP x4 only. In the end i spent £120 ish on an X850Pro and runs Battlefield 2 sweet(er). If memory serves me correct i was looking at £80 cards and they were worse that what i already had. As Pin said, 1GB+ RAM will help a game such as Battlefield 2142. Just my experience mate. Dunkield
Thanks for the replies, it's a P4 2.8Ghz, with 1.5Gb of DDR RAM, bus speed is 533Mhz The board is proprietary so I can't tell you what make it is most likely a debadged Asus or Mitac. Having had a poke about, it looks like the Radeon can still be had for 40 quid, so unless there is anything better/cheaper I may get one of those and then bin the whole thing and get a nice new pci-e system in the new year.
