naddan28
I was wondering what accessories would you reccomend for hunting in the field? I have my rifle, slip, pellets and scope but that is it! I take it wellies are probably the best form of footwear, but as for clothing and other bits what would you reccomend? I am thinking for xmas presents from the family, did see a sweet BSA laser and torch add on to go on your scope, ideal for ratting and rabbit shooting at night. I think i will leave that for a while and just stick to the pigeons, obviously once my shooting is to par.

beatingisbest
Some good boots, waterproofs, a good quality knife for paunching. what is paunching? Also what is blueing on a gun? Paunching- another name for gutting Bluing on a gun is the metal parts that have a very dark blue or black finish to them, this is made by heating the metal then placing the very hot metal in oil, bluing is extremely common on barrels. Lancs Lad
I strongly suggest anything that is SHINEY... Anything that you THINK you need............... Antying that you THINK will be usefull........... ANYTHING that makes a red dot on something miles away....or looks good shining through the fog....... As for useful stuff, then I would only suggest that you get a good set of warm clothing......waterproofs and foot wear...........You have everything else that you need.............. naddan28
Thanks for clearing that one up, also do you guys wear camo? also i take it wellies are the norm as well? I am just a bit nervous as planning to visit the farm i have permission to shoot for the first time on either sunday or wednesday (prob latter as bloody uni tests!) so want to look respectable and knowledgable! I was thinking of wearing some wellies will my light wieght black waterproof suit i wear in the rain for golf, opinions on that? Also got to convience us air gun shooters can dispatch pigeons etc (obviously once i become a competant shot) he said i wont have any luck shooting pigeons etc as an air rifle is not powerful enough. I reckon my BSA Lightning could dispatch a Corvid or pigeon at about 45 yards with a good shot, is that a reasonable assumption?
pin
Nock 10 yds off and you are in the ball park. Depends on where you hit them, what you hit them with and how consistent you are. For "rough" shooting there isn't really a dress code. Rabbits don't see in colour but camo helps break up your shape, mind I know people who have plenty of success without. If you were going to a formal pheasant shoot, worry about the garb, otherwise take with you a few plastic bags for the shot quarry, a sharp knife for sorting it out and just enjoy it. Make sure you can hit things first, though
naddan28
thanks so much pin, i will make sure i can shoot first as i have permission to practice on the land as well. He said he is going to take me on a walk on my first visit to show me where i can and cant shoot. I know he is family but i have never met him as he is my partners uncle, but as i am new to the sport i just wondered if there is some kind of norm clothing etc. You guys have been great and i am looking foward to the shoot so much! I have only fired 2 rounds as the light was **** and therefore have not set the scope. Although both shots were within 1cm or so, much more accurate than i ever was with my friend's B2 (not surprising, its like going for a pegeout 105 to an Mercedes)! What sort of knife should i look for? Is there some sort of legislation for carrying one on farmland? I was considering getting a game bag for xmas anyone use them? SNAKEBITE
Whatever you have in your wallet you will be able to spend on extras, and then some. Remember the old term K.I.S.S.? (Keep It Simple Stupid!) I have learnt to apply that to my gear now. This is after a few costly errors. Spend as much as you can on your knife, it will last a life time. There is no firm design which is best, just personnal preference. I use a Buck fixed blade and a Buck folder . If you are carrying it when shooting then you will be fine. Take it into the pub and you won't be. As for the clothing, go for army surplus. You can always get some of the trendy Advantage Timber gear as you get more into it. I have a full set of both patterns and it really depends on what the terrain is like as to what you wear. Although the DPM is harder wearing and cheaper to replace. I prefer Boots but wear wellies as they can be put in the boot bag and left. Just beware of the tops rubbing togther and making a noise just at the wrong time when stalking! luckytrigger
Neoprene wellies, rangefinder, opinel knife (very cheap and easy to sharpen),good first aid kit...Plenty of ammo! I do own some expensive waterproofs in realtree but find that i usually wear cheap ex german army flektarn which is excellent and very hard wearing. If your lamping a good quality headlamp is a must. I use a lightweight l.e.d model which is nice and bright and very durable..
stubby
look on the bay of E and get ya self some DVD's I'd suggest springtime pest control by Fred Carter. He will show you all you need to know, there's a complete set of these DVD's the 2nd one being Carters Country Classics, you'll get shown the correct way to gut a rabbit and also how the cut the breast meat from pigeon I wouldent wear ya all in one black golf suit, its gonna make ya look like a big black spot on the landscape to any bunnies, if ya aint got any ex army surplus just go for a pair of jeans and dark coloured jacket, stick 2pr socks on cos theres nothing worst than shooting when ya cant feel ya pinkies, you can always take a pair off If need be. naddan28
Thanks, for the tips guys, gonna hot foot it down to the local surplus store tomorrow morning! How much should i be looking to pay for some camo trousers and jacket/top or if not an all in one suit? What type of camo would you reccomend as it is farmland, mainly open not to all that wooded. pin
Just get a pair of DPM trousers and a jacket, I wouldn't pay more than £20-25 for both. Opinel No4 is a great knife, cheap as chips so you won't throw a hissy fit when you leave it in the field. As snakebite said don't worry about "all the kit" just now, you can buy all that as you feel the need.
stubby
ex army stuff will be ya cheapest, trousers £15/20 ish and maybe a little more for a jacket, Id go for 2pc as in the summer time ya cant take the top off a 1piece remember DONT !!! wash ya cammo in sweet smelling powder or conditioner, as rabbits will smell you a mile away, always approach them with the wind in your face, even if that means going the long way round to get to where they are as well as getting good with ya rifle, youll need to practise your stalking, getting close to the quarry, if theres no cover, flat on your belly and crawl, keeping an eye on the rabbits, if they lift their head FREEZE untill they return to feeding, with practise you can get bloody close before they twig it,
naddan28
Thats one of the bits of airgunning i am most looking foward to, the whole fieldcraft side of shooting.
naddan28
Also do you guys carry Swiss Army Knives? I just wonder (other than gutting) what use a knife will serve? I suppose you could use it to kill any incapiated quarry but i would not just a second shot to the head much more humane. So wellingtons or hiking boots? pin
Forget swiss army knives, useless little things. Leatherman, more like it. Yep, for paunching off rabbits, helping get the wings offof flying steak When you shoot rabbit, first you "pee" them out, hold by front legs, thumb and forefinger, thumb on the underside, start half way down and squeeze medium hard. You will see the pee come out, repeat until no pee left or you will regret it later. Then paunch them, small cut starting at chest so you don't puncture the poo sack (you will only do this once, trust me . Carry that on down the middle belly to the business end Simply hold by back legs and open, throwing out the intestines for charlie, save them, whatever Make sure you keep the kidneys and the liver, check the liver for a nice smooth redish blood colour all over, if it has any discolouration or white spots discard it (the meat will be fine though). Nothing better than a couple of coney livers and kidneys fried in clarified butter 30s a side, salt and pepper and some nice buttered toast - a hunters bounty Some good boots, waterproofs, a good quality knife for paunching. i also like to take my teddy bear just incase i get loanly as i like to cuddle it when i get scared i awwh nice cheers kirky If you are going to fake-quote me, young Kirky, you'd do well to use a spelling checker, because I do
