40 gn sierra hp in hornet

anyone used these please ? how do they compare in frangibility next to 35 and 40 grain vmax?

Never tried them in the CZ.

They will be ok with normal precautions.

Exactly what are your concerns? are you looking for a projectile that on hitting quarry will dump all of its energy or are you worried about a missed shot and the projectile hitting the ground at a shallow angle?

both i suppose i was wondering if they perform similarly to the v max i use

Have just played with some of these but did not shoot any quarry. They were very accurate but before I got any further I had an offer for the rifle I'd used them in which I accepted. They don't compete (not criticism, just fact) with those that I use in the other rifle so progress ceased at that point. However, perusal of he Sierra Bullets website reflects that they, themselves, state that at Hornet velocities these are, "hard" so they may not meet your requirements. I infer from their description that whereas they're described as an explosive varminter bullet, they need some poke to realise that potential. I use the Sierra Infinity Suite ballistic tables and the ballistic table for the bullet itself it throws up 3400 as a starting point, but the reloading guide using Lil'Gun gives a max of 2800ft/sec. I would suggest that 3000 is possible, but is that sufficiently higher than the 2800 and not too much below the 3400 to achieve your objective?

probably not what i want then i am looking for a highly frangible replacement for 35gn v max in light of hornady suspending production of said round! Might have to try and get hold of some 34gn dogtowns.

Yes i do.

over 12.8 grain o lilgun powder and it is explosive on rabits.

some rabits headshoted(about 120-150 yards) and skined show some copper jacket fragments

but generaly i didnt notice any problem with shalow angle on the ground.

i think they are just spot on in my rifle and will stick with them.

 

Btw copper jacket looks to be quite thin on thise bullets.

Hopefully i will still be able to source 40 gn bt's like vmax and blitz king but my interest in the hp was also down to it being one of the shorter bullets that fit my standard cz mag

I removed the plastic part in the mag that is built around standard Hornet bullets and thinned it down so a longer col could achieved.
