Remington 11-87 jamming this morning

Got this gun a few weeks ago and used it today for the 1st time,

When I did get it I stripped it down cleaned it then put 6x 32 g 70mm clear pigeon to see if it cycled ok with no probs cycled excellent with the gun near enough vertical.

Took it clay shooting today using 28g compx 65mm ,, shot , jam , shot , jam , you get the idea some where getting trapped in the action , some where staying in the chamber , some where ejecting without the 2nd shell getting loaded...

Got a box of eleyfirst off my mate 67mm and 29g sleight improvement , was varying but still jamming on average once every 4 birds , instead of one in 2.

Slight improvement but I still had the 50 on report.

Loved the gun 41/50, so happy for its first outing.

Stripped the gun at home not too bad wouldn't expect it to jam ŵith the condition it was in.

Myself I am am putting it down to light loads and the length of the case as it loved the 32g

Anyone got any views on what to do whether to investigate or just use longer cases and heavier loads for clays.....

Was the gun new when you got it? I've had a few jams with my one with 28 grams but in talking maybe 1 shot out of 250 where the shell would eject but the unfired one just sitting ontop of the loading gate and the bolt locked back. Pretty much fixed it by stretching the mag spring out and lubing everything up pretty good

Make sure the barrel ports are clean... run a small drill bit through them (hand held)..or squirt solvent and use a pipe cleaner

also check the circular spring around the excess gas ports is not loose...

Is the gas "O" ring in good condition i.e no cuts/nicks , if so , replace.

The magazine spring can cause this problem as in post no2 ,When the bolt comes back it lock's open and then it should release a cartridge from the magazine which is propelled into position for loading and hits the bolt release by the spring pressure ,If the spring is to weak then it does not hit the bolt release hard enough and the bolt stay's locked back therefore jamming open.

Barrel ports are clean, I have just rang one of the lads off here that knows his loading and he has advised to use 70mm ,,,his Baikal doesn't like 28g 65mm but can cycle a 21g 70mm..

I will experiment with some heavier and longer shells tommorow to rule the gun Out and put it down to the shell...(i no it can cycle 32g 70mm faultlessly as said in opening post)

I will stretch the mag spring if there is no improvement with the longer cases / heavier loads.

I also ordered new seals when I got the gun from my rfd but have yet to arrive.

Will post out comings tommorow ...

I'm having exactly the same problem, new seal, extractor claw and thoroughly cleaned but it still won't cycle properly.

Just a thought, I was told today that if you don't hold them really tight they could refuse to cycle ?

just out of curiosity have you tried 70mm through it , a lot of the American forums seem to all use a heavy long load with no probs.

My pet load is the fiocchi top 1 shell. It's 28 gram and 67mm and they ran fine in mine even before i had my ports opened so you could give some 67mm's a try. But defo try the mag spring to see if that makes a difference. Also just remembed it may be down to what barrel length you have as i've been told the ports are different sizes for dif length barrels.

I only use 70mm but it makes no difference. I'm thinking about a new mag spring as suggested above, about the only thing I haven't tried !!. having a problem sourcing one at the moment, any ideas ?

just done the spring while I had it in bits hope you can't over stretch I've just nearly put a hole in the patio doors with it :) all back together I will try some 70mm tommorow I no it was a bit better on 67mm than 65mm and when I showed it 70mm 32g

A couple of week ago it loved them , well I will no tommorow :)

I would"t stretch any spring on a auto trail cartaridges some like one sort and others dont it ran ok the other day with 70mm 32g then its working fine it just dont like the 65-67mm cases test a box of 70mm 28g with a bit of a punch and itl work :shoot:

i think you broke it thats my story anyway,, I've stretched that spring so if you don't hear from me again you no why, I've told the mrs you can have my guns.. Ill see if it cycles them 70mm clear pigeon like it did the other day , if it does that's my new clay round :) Edited by delburt0

Another cause of jamming annd /or stovepiping is the plastic cartridge follower in the mag tube...

The tube must be clean and lightly lubed and a light grease around the follower..

They can slightly stick and shuffle down the tube and not glide smoothly..

I had a Rem 1100 LT20 some years ago that used to jam every 5-6 carts and it was due to this so quickly part-exed...

In USA the plastic follower is routinely swapped out with a polished metal one...

Not possible here due to the crimp ..so if faulty will cost hundreds of £££ to remove the mag tube , replace follower , resolder tube and reblack the receiver...

All for the sake of a 50p bit of plastic

Thank you, he uses the same suppliers as myself, however when he opens on Tuesday I shall certainly ask him the question :)

i no my rfd ordered the spare o rings I'm going through in morning to change the compx that it won't cycle so I will ask him where he gets his Remington spares from.
