Gully
I found this on the BASC's website. It would be nice to give the nice policeman a copy 'for future reference' if you're stopped BASC Guide to shooters
russuk
Hiya, I'm on the fence with this one. if someone reports a incedent involving a firearm, i'd like the police to act. We all might be going about our own business in a lawfull way, but what if the village idiot wasn't. If the police found the weapon was legal and so were you, fine, that should be the end of a very little story. However there'd be upraw if the village idiot managed to hurt someone and the police received a report and never followed it up. We've all been face down in the mud just for fun, i wouldn't mind helping the fuss for five minutes just to clear things up. But like mentioned, sportsmen on their own permission with legal weapons are being arrased and un-nessarery files are being logged, thats the problem that needs to be addressed. regards kieran Spot on, the police are in a no win situation. For the one call they don't attend they could be dealing with a shotgun peppered body lying in a field, shot by some raving loony mad man. Granted that this is probably a 1 in 100000000000000000000000 scenario, but I wouldn't like to be that one person, or the family of that one person. Also like you said, the police can use common sense and help foster better relations with the genuine shooting community by being a lot less anal. The police treat shooters as quilty untill proved innocent.
russuk
And that needs to change. The police are more than capable of using common sense, I've been in many instances where they have, situations have been resolved in minutes and everyone is happy. Unfortunatly I've been in situations where they haven't and they're the ones that help foster these frosty relations.
decroyffe
Hiya Rabid, that's the point i was tring to get across, and the way it should be. the other point was once the sportsman was proven inocent, then they should be left to get on with the task in hand. It's a difficult situation, would you be happy with everyone walking around with a loaded weapon? It's so easy to adjust the power on a air rifle now, that even the village idiot could do it. Everyone keeps banging on about there rights but seem to forget those who don't chose to shoot, have rights aswell. Take the Logan S16, it looks like summet off Rambo. Anyone not clued up would be right to think a rifle like that isn't anything but a rim, or centre fire. It's not going to hurt anything or anyone by giving five minutes of your time just to clear up the situation, but that seems to be the problem. There's no system to deal with a situation like that and something needs to be done. If you repoted somebody you didn't know with a rifle, and you weren't sure they were allowed to be there, and the police did nothing, how would you feel if they hurt someone? If that someone was anything do do with me, i'd want heads just like you.

It's a bit like reporting a motorist with a bald tyre, incase he skids in the wet and runs someone over. No one can predict what someone else might do. I would most likely mind my own business or risk ending up in court as a witness and suffer everything else that comes as a consequence of interfering in police business. It's up to the police to catch criminals. I would rather ten criminals went free than one innocent man gets done. let's face it, the police will do you for anything if they can. I don't trust them one bit.
decroyffe
Thats a fair comment Rabid. I'd still be sat down drinking my pint with you, cos i wouldn't approch anyone i didn't know with a rifle. But bare in mind, locals know there area like i know mine, and if there not surposed to be there i'd know, so i would report a stranger, but like you, i wouldn't want to give my name. If the mans inocent there should be no problem, but were up against it. the insodents we see in the press, involving law abiding sportsmen are few and fare between, but there's more idiots in the press with ilegal fire arms tresspassing, so it's all good in my eye's. also there's the point of poachers. if it's taken you years to aqure shooting permission, and poachers help themselfs to a days pigeon shooting on your land, then decided to break the fence's and shoot next to the horse field where not allowed, you'd be pritty gutted if Mr Farmer said GET ORF MY LAND. It's just a case of looking out for each other. regards kieran
