wickedandlazee
Gents Found this today, looked it up in mushrooms by roger phillips - pretty certain it is a grey knight (tricholoma family). It has a grey top and white/cream gills. Also smells mushroomy and not almondy or acrid. It is also dry and not slimy to the touch so pretty certain it is edible. Piccies below. Any help would be appreciated, It is quite large and looks very tasty If it is OK there are quite a few around. Found it next to a hedgerow. top view side view underneath

I see a lot of fungi and a lot of it is edible. But as i know nothing about fungi I leave them alone. So any help would be appreciated. henry d
Cut the stem off and place on a piece of white paper and slip a piece of light brown/buff under a small portion and leave over night. The spores will drop onto the paper and leave a trace and the colour of the print will help with ID.If you go a step further you can put the spores under the microscope and check the shape . Try it next time you get mushies at the super market. The main way to ID is by shape/size,spore bearing surface......... I like Rogers site and books but find the Collins pocket gem exactly that

wickedandlazee
Did a spore print but canna get the piccie of me mobile at the minute. The spores were white but i do not have a microscope so i cannot look at the size or shape. I am pretty certain that it is what i said at the time. i have also looked at all the poisonous varieties and it looks nothing like them at all. Will look at rogers site too. I will try tasting a very small amount just to see if there is any peculiar taste to it (won't swallow it ). My lad has got a microscope type magnifier so i will take the print round there when i drop em back at their mums see if that can confirm anything. Have also posted a message on rogers website see if they can help. Will keep you updated. cheers
