r1steele
Shallow end and spread it out +1 Your ducks need to be able to reach the feed so any deeper than the length of a ducks neck is wasted. If you are putting reared ducks onto the pond it may be worthwhile putting a little on the very edge of the bank but don't go crazy as it will just attract vermin. r1steele
Anyone ever use rolled barley, it's all I could get today? Should be ok. Ducks will usually eat anything cereal based so they will go for it but as it's rolled it will soak up water quickly and therefor the ducks will process it quickly so you may get through quite a bit of it. If you can get something with a bit more 'body' to it to mix in, it will last longer. If they do get through it too quick your pond may not have enough food to keep the ducks coming in regular as they will go elsewhere looking for food. Degalle79
Thanks. It is a very small 'hole' and there are no ducks coming yet, trying to entice a few but bit pessimistic about my chance, or do they have an uncanny way of finding it even if it not a regular place for them to feed? If they start clearing it I will get some proper barley or wheat.
r1steele
Get some into your pond as soon as you can as they can spot the dust etc from the food floating on the surface from a good distance and once they find it they will start to use it more regularly. You're better off feeding about 1/2-1 bag around the shallows even before you see any ducks using your pond and keep an eye out for them using it and then start a regular feeding routine. You could also consider putting some sharp grit around the margins if there isn't any as once the ducks know they can feed and grit at the same place they tend to hold better as they have no need to go elsewhere.
