Hello to all. I am very new to everything gun related and consequently have some simple questions, the answers to which I would be most grateful:

- what is a hammer gun?

- I prefer the look of s/s shotguns. How does the use of s/s compare to that of o/u guns? (I am looking to shoot some rabbits)

- I have found a few gunsmiths in my area (s/e Kent). Could anybody recommend a good, honest gunsmith close by?

Many thanks for any attempts made to enlighten me.

Dan

Very simply, a hammer gun is a weapon where the hammers are on the outside of the gun, as opposed to being contained within the gun.

The hammers have to be manually cocked, before the gun can be fired.

I would not suggest a new shooter buys a hammer gun.

Some shooters consider the "single barrel" aiming of an under and over to be easier and quicker than a side by side.

Which is why they are used extensively in clay pigeon shooting.

Although you refer to "Gunsmiths", I assume you mean "Gun Shops".

All of the Gun Shops in Kent are fair and "honest", in my opinion.

You may get better deals at some than others.

The CountryWay in West Malling is definitely one of the best for cheaper cartridge and gun prices.

i find my O/U easier to shoot with than my SbS, that said i love the looks and feel of sbs guns and will defo get another to add to the collection, depending on your buget theres some very cheap sbs's out there compared to o/u guns, as been said Hammer guns are a differant kettle of fish. but great looking guns all the same

Thanks suggs. Agree that the look of hammers are lovely also. So much choice out there and with no experience, it'll be partly luck am sure when choosing a good shotgun - just hope i don't go for one with looks but no use (magpie style). A happy medium would be nice. Will leave a lot to the honest gunsmith...

it all about fit at the end of the day mate, some guns may look the biz to you but soon as you shoulder them its feels like having 2 left arms, go for what feels the best rather than looks or price even.

i only use a really good shop in Romford Essex, ill happly take you there when your ready to buy if you like or can pass on there details to you, great service there and very well priced.

Excellent, thank you very much. If you could give me the address that would be useful - have seen a few Essex way so may be tempted to go there - Parkford Shooting Centre, Essex Guns and International Firearms all seem within distance.

Was hoping that it would be about the 'fit' of it. At least I can judge that for myself.

Cheers

You can try Chris Potters in Tonbridge Wells or K.W.G In Ashford.

I have used both, Chris Potter has a much larger selection, espescially over and unders but I was in KWG this week getteing some shells and KWG did have a number of side by sides in their rack.

By the way £130.00 for 1000 Gamebore Blue Diamond Felt Wad 28gms size 8) I dont know how that fairs with other shops but KWG are just 5 mins from me so I did save on time and fuel etc.

Thanks to both eagleye and Bradders. Went to K.W.G. in Ashford after a night shift - saw what i thought were some nice s/s shotguns (but was a little dazed after work). More recently went to a shop in Minster, Thanet - got my cabinet from there. Don't suppose you know of him? Or the shooting club in Sturry, Canterbury?

Thanks,

Dan
