henry d
I`ve just tried to pay my energy bill and I was led to believe that when typing in my card details there should be a security "padlock" on screen,is this right ? I just tried and couldn`t see it where it should have been and when I phoned them after several minutes of muzak and recorded messages of blah,I finally got one stating there was a security alert and the building was being evacuated............then they dumped my call
Wookie
Damn. Not good that, but I'd say it was legit. As for the padlock thing, it's usually in the lower right of the screen. If you use Firefox, then the address bar will go yellow too. If you don't see the padlock, don't use your credit card.
ChrisNicholls
And in the address bar the URL should begin with HTTPS and not just HTTP.
pin
I don't want to worry any of you, but just because there is a little padlock, or the address bar turns yellow doesn't actually mean you are safe at all.
Piebob
Agree, and whilst I can't be 100% sure, I'm reasonably confident that it was a "secure" internet order that lead to a lot of cash being removed from my credit card. pin
And in the address bar the URL should begin with HTTPS and not just HTTP. Most browsers these days will work just fine with http:443 - so if you see a padlock and no HTTPS, it might not be something worth worrying about either. Its a minefield. I probably worry too much, certainly more than is healthy for the "man on the street", but its my job. I shop all the time on the net, and I am not as careful as I should be. I don't have to be though, use a respected credit card with an "on-line fraud guarantee" and you don't need to be Financial institutions don't take on-line fraud in this country seriously, until they do, I don't see why we should Agree, and whilst I can't be 100% sure, I'm reasonably confident that it was a "secure" internet order that lead to a lot of cash being removed from my credit card. Did you get fleeced?
