Dazza9t9
Hey all, I currently drive a BMW 120d, I've not had it long. It follows a nissan skyline. Before moving house I had a 13mile round trip commute so it didnt really matter what car I drove. Since moving house I now have a 80mile round trip to work and back (all motorway driving) I do like the BMW and I am getting 500miles to a full £70 tank. The BMW is currently valued at £6500 Now I so fancy a 4x4, what recommendations do people have for a daily driver. Is there anything that would come close to the economy of the BMW? I am interested in people's thoughts
superspark
Not realy, a 4x4 will always drink more due to the weight and you will find it will cost a lot more to fill due to a much larger tank
welsh1
Just to give you an idea,my navara cost between £90-100 to fill at the current fluctuating diesel prices, and I get 450-470 out of a tank. I could get slightly better fuel economy by fitting road tyres, but that would defeat the purpose. Why not look at two vehicles?a small Citroen/corsa type vehicle for commuting, and a 4x4 to go shooting.

welsh1
Thank you for the input What about something like an x trail I don't know about the xtrail, but i am sure some of the members on here have some and if my memory serves me have given good reports on them when posting,if i remember one of the only niggles was slightly low ground clearance.I have looked at them in the nissan garage when my navara was being serviced last week and they look good inside and out. Hamster
My wife had two new X3's, both 2.0Di 6 speed manuals first and second phase models, they did 35 mpg combined so it is possible you may get close to 40 in your circumstances. A Toyota RAV4 of similar spec may just do the same but remember things like insurance, tyres and road tax jump up a step or two as well. aris
I get 40-50mpg if i drive nicely on the motorway on a VW tiguan 4-motion. Not a true 4x4, more an SUV - but it s 4 wheel drive and very comfy. I get around 30-40 mpg off the motorway. Road tax is £175, not too high insurance group. Tyres around £180 each for quality ones like Michelin. It is a 6 speed manual 170ps. Edited September 15, 2013 by aris
robbiep
I did have a X3 2.0d a few years ago, which averaged about 40 mpg, 45 on a long motorway run. However, the most important thing with a 4x4 is the tyres. Big and chunky. Hell, if you could put those on your 120d you'd find it was moderately decent on muddy tracks and fields, even just RWD. But those sort of tyres will clobber the fuel economy of anything. I'd suggest a cheapo thing for a shooting truck. Not a Disco or Defender (unless you want to spend all your time fixing it), but something like a Terrano or Trooper.
Dazza9t9
Thanks everyone for the input. I'm thinking it maybe best to keep the 120d as a commuter and save up for a cheap shooting truck
pimpkiller
hyundai ix35 diesel is supposed to be economical, but frankly a separate shooting bus would be better as you probably would use it a lot less anyway.
Uncle Albert
I've had my X-Trail now for 3 mths and it does low 30's to the gallon. That is, of course, not being heavy right footed. It is the T-Spec so has a 2.5lit engine. Chuffed to buxxxxy with it as I have been looking for a 4x4 for a long time. To get one with reasonable mileage and at a reasonable price I found you had to be prepared to go half way up the country. This one happened to come into a garage down the road to me and I nearly tore his hand off. Good price, good low mileage. Drives sweet as a nut with loads of toys. If you are looking for a small 4x4 try the little Suzuki. The Jimny, I think it's called. OK if you just want it for a shooting wagon but there ain't much room inside but if it's cheap enough then you could customise it for shooting. Chop the back and put in a shooting seat and hand lamp etc. Cable drum for a winch on the front?
