puppy training

Just looking for advice on trainng a pup, a springer 9weeks old, I am starting the 8 week course as pinned by the knowledgable NTTF. A question or two, regarding the type of lead and collar and the amount of pulling that should or should not occur.

Is a flat collar and lead sufficient at this time, and should the pup when refusing to move be given a pop or bribe her with treats.

I know that the training program talks about using treats for learning commands 'sit' etc I assume that it is the same for getting her to learn to walk on hte lead?

Sorry if this seems really basic but have got my first gun dog and want to make the best job I can in training her, and want to get it right from the start. :good:

Hi Mate,

First off a flat collar and 6 foot lead are adaquate for all of the training except the recall. You require a longer lead roughly 28 foot, either in the form of a retractable lead or a long line.

Be sure to spend the first bit bent over teaching her to follow the treat and teaching the turn when starting to teach the heel or you will run into positioning problems later on.

When teaching the recall, give the command and if she does not start to come right away a small pop along with lots of praise and backing up. When she reaches you she gets the treat. I like to teach them to sit in front of me when I call them in before they get the treat. This is done by having the treat out and ready before you call, and starting it down about knee hieght against your leg. When she reaches you she will be tight to the front of your legs and all you have to do is raise the treat up your legs to cause her to sit.

Remember to only say the command once and to keep it fun.

Would like to thank NTTF for the advice and posting training info that I have used to train my first gun dog. She is now 1 yr old and can do what I need her for, which is a bit of walked up shooting. She walks to heal, quaters, stops on the whistle, sit and stay, wait, retrieve on land and water.

I have shot over her a few times, bit of a problem running in at teh sound of the shot, working on that at the moment. We will never do field trials etc but am looking forward to this season, our club starts Nov 1st, pheasant, partridge and duck on the menu. :good:

thats good to hear, I'm just starting the programme with mine and a week in so far so good.

Oh and while we're here NTTF is the long line essential? my GWP is recalling well so far and is in an enclosed space, well 2 acre fenced paddock. She stops when called and comes back immediately would you have the line on just in case or try without if it seemed to be working.
