Vacuum packer advice

Evening, Im after some advice on a vacuum packing machine. I keep a lot of game and duck in the freezer during the season to eat at my convenience throughout the year, but I cant help thinking that they would be a lot better vacuum packed. At the moment I just put them in plastic bags then into the freezer and im getting a lot of freezer burn. Does anyone use a vacuum packer for there game? Are they worth the money? Any advice would be great, thanks

I bought one of these:

http://www.lakeland.co.uk/15349/FoodSaver

It wraps fresh meat and fish for the freezer, meat and fish is cured in it (bacon, bresoala and salt beef etc) and marinated in it. It's used for storing smoked items and the wrapping (a bit heavy price wise at £8 a roll) is also durable enough to allow re-heating of wrapped items in boiling water.

I also use it for storing/freezing fishing baits without ever worrying about leaks or odour contamination.

I can't sing its praises high enough.

EDIT: Couldn't spell "odour".

not sure on temp of freezer? That one DrBlox is talking about sounds good. I just feel that the plastic bags im using aren't good enough to keep the birds etc half decent. Im putting a lot of time into plucking and cleaning the birds so I feel I should be doing them justice by freezing properly.

no need to vac pack if you are freezing vac packing is to pre long the life of fresh food

just pack it well

Vac packing and freezing is very much a belt and braces approach: minimisation of oxygen availability as well as minimising dehydration as well as freezing.

Don't forget freezing doesn't stop "normal" decay/degradation processes - it merely slows them down. Most decay processes require oxygen (apart from fungal induced ones).

Freezer burn is caused by oxidation when air hits the food , vac packing removes the air that causes freezer burn

Yes! Vac packing also stops dehydration of the food and prolongs the storage life (a pathologist told me it would at least double the storage life the blurb with the vac packer suggests a fourfold increase in the storage time of frozen meat).

The bags and rolls supplied with that thing I recommended are really tough unlike clingfilm which, in my experience, has a lifetime of about 14 months at freezer temperatures.
