Some of the fields close the the village which had barley in them were immediately drilled by the efficient farming operators.

I assumed that the fields had been drilled with rape as per the normal rotation but I noticed something slightly different about the emerging plants when I took the dogs out this morning. Not being able to immediately identify the varied leaves I spoke to the farm manager who advised me that he had drilled a green manure crop of mustard, vetch and volunteer wheat. The first two are nitrogen attractors and the crop will be ploughed in in the spring and spring barley sown.

There are pigeons on the fields at the moment but not in any great numbers. However I do know that they do like mustard and vetch when it is available so I will be keeping a careful eye in that direction.
