JDog
Some of the fields close the the village which had barley in them were immediately drilled by the efficient farming operators. I assumed that the fields had been drilled with rape as per the normal rotation but I noticed something slightly different about the emerging plants when I took the dogs out this morning. Not being able to immediately identify the varied leaves I spoke to the farm manager who advised me that he had drilled a green manure crop of mustard, vetch and volunteer wheat. The first two are nitrogen attractors and the crop will be ploughed in in the spring and spring barley sown. There are pigeons on the fields at the moment but not in any great numbers. However I do know that they do like mustard and vetch when it is available so I will be keeping a careful eye in that direction.
filzee
One of the farmers i shoot for drills acres and acres of mustard most years but i have never really seen a bird on them. The partridge and pheasant like it though so if you have birds about or rough shoot always worth a walk through
stiggy84arsenal
Last year a neighbouring farm planted mustard and the birds went mad for it until it flowered. Im sure they where on it during December and January Keep an eye on it thats the best thing to do! !!
