the stock will not matter as i have a GRS laminate stock

Depends what your doing with it, I shouldn't be buying a 1-12 for target shooting but ideal for normal vermin work etc. The Older Remington were far better than todays that's just a fact, if you must buy a remi fine but if your buying new there are so many other options that represent better value new today,

A neighbour bought a new .300 win mag 700 and the darn barrel was loose- how bad does it get? this is not hearsay.

Many questions come to mind, first off, what is your intended use of the rifle?

You may have a stock but not all the 700 will fit it, so you may have to do some work on it, or forget it, or get another, or live with the factory.

A 26" Varmint Fluted is still a flagpole and not light, do you intend to fit a moderator?

Remington tend to favour long(ish) barrels and many people get them chopped up front, depending on their intended use!
