d foxxer
hi folks just gearing up for a bit of pigeon and crow bashing not done any shotgunning for 20 years and that was only shooting ferretted rabbits with an old argyle single barrel my main forte is vermin [fox rabbit crow] with a 20 tac and soon a 6br but bought an escort backalong and had a go with it a couple of weeks ago at pigeon and I really enjoyed it although I only managed one bird [found out why afterwards] the rfd I got the gun from gave me a box of shells saying that for crows I would need something with some clout so try these and gave me a box of express super game thankyou says I and off I went anyway shot a pigeon and killed it dead in the air never hit anything else for the session was a howling gale and only a few birds coming few and far between [i only wanted to try the gun] so at pack up time my mate ask me why I was using ones I said I am using sixes he then picked up my empty cases and showed the big 1 that I hadn't noticed on he side of the case I thought about my rfd telling me that no pigeon or crow need have no fear of me as I couldn't hit a barn door and burst out laughing[no wonder he gave them to me] anyway was a good hoot but my question is what brand of shells are most favoured for pigeon and crows and where can I find out about chokes ie and best use of them for what and why .....I have picked up a case of fob standards to kick off with and these are sixes definatly but interested in what you fellers use cheers for now foxxer
Cranfield
Welcome to Pigeon Watch. 28gm or 30gm No6's are my standard choice for pigeons and rooks, the make is almost irrelevant IMO, but I shoot mainly Gamebore cartridges. If you have further questions about chokes, etc., its always best to make a separate post, that way you get better and more specific responses. Lord Geordie
Crows I use a #6 @ 32g but as above, 28g is fine! Pigeon, depending on range! Can be taken with anything upto #7. I do most of mine within 20-35 yards. I use mainly #6 but I have used #7 to good effect! As for choke choice, I tend to stick a 1/2 in and forget about it! fenboy
The norm is 30-32 gram of 6s ,though I will happily shoot pigeon and crows with anything from 28gram 7.5s upwards
