arko
My heart sank when I picked up the phone yesterday to discover it was the police on the other end. One of my boys has been kicked out of sixth form for drinking on an outing and getting bladdered on the coach home.... so I naturally thought it was to do with him again as the police got involved last time. But to my surprise it wasnt and so I felt quite puzzled as to why they were ringing. Well, I had completely forgotten about my SGC application as I was expecting it to take ages for a home visit after reading about some members experiences on here. They rang to make an appointment to come see me next week!. Is this a good time-frame for the first contact?... I sent in the application on the 1st December on the new forms (201 joint application FAC and SGC) which they received on the 3rd. Now Im all excited, just hope she (yes "she" ) likes my bedroom where my cabinet is fitted! hahaha.
Maldred4
That is pretty good going for turn round times. I think the average around the country is 8-12 weeks so you have done well. When I had my interview the police said that they start to become more interested if calls come into them relating to people or incidents at a place where firearms are kept particularly and quite rightly domestic incidents. Don't be surprised if your sons 6th form outing does get bought up. If it involved the police she will definitely know about it and be honest. As long as your cabinet is fitted as per guidelines you shouldn't have a problem with that. I got asked about keys for my cabinet and making sure no one else had access to them and this was really stressed on this. If you have time read up on the BASC website the 'Shotgun Safety Code of Practise is well worth reading in preparation. Hope it all goes well and let us know how you get on. If it is mentioned I wont have any problem airing my views on his behaviour.... I was livid!.... if the teacher or whoever informed the police hadnt done it, then I would have frog-marched him down to the nick myself. As for the cabinet keys, one set will be well hidden and the other in my pocket. If she asks where I keep the other set, I will tell her that I cannot reveal that even to her. Apparently if I tell anyone where the second set is I haven't made every attempt possible to prevent anyone else gaining access to the cabinet. (Read it online somewhere.) Is that exactly correct? Maybe South Wales police are on for breaking a record for issuing an SGC license? What a chrimbo present that will be!

It's your responsibility to ensure that unauthorised persons do not have access to your guns so yes in a nutshell what you say is correct you wouldn't have made every attempt possible. My FEO explained that they recently prosecuted a chap and his wife due to her having access to his cabinet. He advised me to get a key safe and the mount it inside a cupboard away from the gun cabinet.
arko
Wow!... They really actually prosecuted a bloke because his wife had access?... Sounds harsh but I suppose I could see the consequences if he ever came home with lipstick on his collar! hahahaha..... just kidding. That really does quite shock me. Thanks for the heads-up. Kes
Make sure you have a convincing approach when the police ask you how you are going to ensure no-one has access to your cabinet(s).

arko
Well, he finally turned up!. He phoned at 09:05am to ask if it was alright to come over straight away as his first appointment cancelled on him. He was only 3 miles away. Panic stations... still hadnt been up the shop to get biscuits! Oh well, maybe he is a diet freak hopefully!... Doorbell rang, dogs went ballistic, (at least he knows we got canine intruder alarms fitted), sat him down in the front room whilst kettle boiled. Anyway, after introducing the wife he got out his file. I told him that if he didnt understand me properly he was only to ask again as I have recently had surgery to replace my jaw due to cancer back in 2010 and the radiotherapy had killed the bone. Well, after mentioning that he told us his story of how he lost his wife to cancer, his brother in law is going through prostrate cancer and how they were both treated and how the doctors do such a tremendous job. I think I recall being asked 2 questions and one of those was where my cabinet was. He checked the cabinet by yanking on the handle until he was satisfied. He then said that due to me having had this condition I was to obtain a letter to say that I was basically of sound mind..hahaha ... a brief medical history about the illness I had and the drugs used to treat it .... one being the prozac I was prescribed but no longer use. His main concern was that if I was still using medication that comes under the list of drugs that would hinder the application from being passed..... but he said he cant see any reason as to why I cant really start looking for a gun. So all in all , I think that is a result! Got the letter sorted already, thats being hand delivered on Monday. Its then just up to the FEO to get the recommendation passed off by the Chief Constable and hopefully in the start of the new year my SGC should land on the door mat. Hopefully happy days! p.s. Forgot to add that the whole interview took the amount of time that it took him to drink a cup of tea!

arko
Hmm... just an update on my SGC application.... Had an email yesterday saying that they still hadn't received the doctors report. Due to the cancer I had back in 2010 they needed to know what medication Im still on. My surgeon said he would do the letter for me, no problem. I guess there must be more sick people leading up to Xmas as he still hasnt done it?... hahahaha. So much for a quick turnaround. At my interview he did say that I could start looking for a gun as he couldnt see any reason why I shouldnt be issued a license even with the meds I'm on and was on at the time. Oh well, got my usual monthly check-up next week so will kick some surgeons butt for action! hahahaha. Lets hope I get it within the next month now!
