B25Modelman
Having been given a shooting mag for christmas, my first in many years, I was lead towards Westley Richards web site, http://www.westleyrichards.com/new-guns/engraving While ALL the work is just unbelievable, check out the Elephants on the 0.5" sidelock double rifle.... JohnfromUK
It is stunning work, and wonderfully skilful. But will these guns ever get used, or just sit is a collectors cabinet? I suspect the latter - which is really rather a shame ......... - so left with very mixed feelings overall. figgy
Some fantastic work the Elephant relief carvings are superb but I like the Spaniel in red gold and platinum looks that good I thought it was enamel. Nice lions head pommel on the pistol grip. Figgy Edited December 27, 2013 by figgy
B25Modelman
Yes, true. In the same mag is a snippet about Longthorne guns, a true English maker (many claim to be such but import parts from Italy etc and finish in the UK) now he is an Engineer who makes all the parts at his UK factory. BUT, £19,000 starting price for an OU...who in the clay field will be seen using one...noone I suspect. You hardly ever see anyone now using high grade Beretta or Browning because of their price. Back in the 70/80's when I was shooting more often they were prolific, B2, B2G, Nikko, Miroku, Beretta 690's a friend even had a SOEELL sidelock...some had Perazzi's which were rare then. AJS (RIP) was then using cheap fixed choke Winchesters and smoking everything in sight. I suppose there is more market from the rich kids buying guns that will never see the field or range, more than once a year, when Joe Blogs only wants to spend up to a grand or two. Two noticable, by me anyway, things in the mag, 1. There are many reviews on guns mostly by one man who in nearly every picture is wearing a different Rolex or other very expensive time piece. 2. There's an article, Introduction to Clay shooting.....which is fair BUT every gun pictured has a value of £5K+. One picture in particular showns a rack of 15 lovely wood stocked guns where not one can be under £10k.
