SNAKEBITE
I have been dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st Centuary eventually and upgraded to broadband. I was on dial up but then got broadband. Tesco (NTL) is the provider. Since upgrading to BB when I click on the "mail" logo on the toolbar at the top of the screen it opens up outlook and tries to connect via dial-up. I cannot get it to open up and bring the e-mails into outlook through the BB connection. I can access the mailbox through the Tesco webpage so all is not lost but it is getting a bit annoying now. Any ideas? (In English, and spoken slowly with the aid of crayon pictures would be appreciated) Cheers.
garyb
If it's outlook express do this... Open internet explorer, then Tools - Internet Options - Connections - And select "Never dial a connection" Hit ok to all windows, close and re open outlook express, should now work. Hope that helps...
SNAKEBITE
Thanks garyb, I did as you said but now it comes up with the dial up box asking me to connect to dial up! Any other ideas?
pin
Assuming you are using outlook express, then do as previously but when you are in the connections tab, click Setup, right at the top where it says "To set up and internet connection, click setup". If it's NTL you probably have an ethernet router, if so you click Next, check "connect to the internet" (top option) Click next, Check "Set up my connection manually", Click next, then check "Connect using a broadband connection that is always on", Click next, then click finish. Once you have done that, you might still need to delete the old dialup settings, you might not. If its still doing it, follow again as previously to get to the connections tab within internet options, then in the box labelled "Dial-up and Virtual Private Network Settings" click on the dial up connection to highlight it and the click remove. That should be it.

SNAKEBITE
Would it make difference that I have gone wireless as well?
pin
Nope. You either still have a dialup connection selected, or you don't have "never dial a connection" ticked. Is it outlook express you are using? Does this happen say when you open internet explorer? Or just when you go to use email? If its actually Outlook (not express) that's a whole different can of asexual arthropods
naddan28
you could always delete the dial up connection from your connections. I think if i remember rightly this is done via start>programs>accesories and somewhere there is a view connections button or something of a similar vien! Then delete the old dial up connection. Hopefully that will stop any program asking for you to dial up!

If its actually Outlook (not express) that's a whole different can of asexual arthropods I have "never dial a connection" ticked. It is outlook express. It does not happen when I open internet explorer. It is definatley Outlook!, been there and done that Thanks for the advice so far.

Bradders
Snakebite, just a couple of quick questions that I have that may help with the problem resolution. When you used dialup who was your internet service provider. I assume that you have a tesco email account and you still want to use this one rather than the NTL email that you would have got with the Broadband for example name@ntlworl.com When you upgraded to NTL broadband did you have a CD that you loaded to configure things, if you did this would have also changed your outlook settings to use NTL as the e-mail host rather than tesco. When sending e-mails NTL will do this on your behalf and forward them for you, but when you receive emails NTL will not go to your tesco account unless you tell it to, this is straightforward to resolve but before I list that here I just wanted to make sure this is the problem you are having. PM if you prefer to talk this through over the phone. Carl.
pin
The problem is Outlook has its own settings for dialling your ISP outside of the general internet settings that have been discussed. Outlook will dial when it starts, and as often as you have set it too. Changing to another ISP won't remove those settings, so it is still trying to dial a connection. Proof of this is when the never dial settings were made, it simply prompts with an empty dialogue box - it has been told to dial, and dial it will The document I linked to on the mickeysoft site explains how to do it, I couldn't be bothered repeating it here since its written well there anyway. Once the changes are made, simple enough to follow, it will stop doing it.
SNAKEBITE
I meant to say it is NOT Outlook I have had that problem already when I installed the Microsoft office thingies. naddan28
ok also try to tick the auto detect network settings. Its found in internet explorer>tools>options>connections and somewhere around there it lies.
pin
That won't help, that simply sets the interface in question to DHCP and tries to figure out if you are running a proxy using some rubbish proprietary mickysoft nonsense. Until we know exactly which email program it is, we can't help.
Mungler
The outlaws have just gone onto broadband with some rinky dink freebie (non hardware firewall) router. The Zone Alarm stats are amazing and within weeks are now into large telephone numbers. The internet is not for the feint hearted these days. pin
An un-patched standard install of windows 98 placed on the internet via broadband would be infected five ways from Tuesday within about two minutes, probably less. Scary :yp:

naddan28
Malware exists for mac's as well, don't be fooled :yp: yep if your stupid enough to install it as either a widget or a program. The 2 proof of concept viruses where never really realised and dont do any real damage. So either way me not being stupid enough to download **** and then even more moronic and install such **** makes it a lot happier place to be!
