misfire

Just a reassurance.

We use to get several misfires at a clay club where I worked. They went on the fire along with all the spent cartridges. Because they were not enclosed in a chamber then they only went of with a gentle pop. The charge burned rather than exploded.

However, there is a theoretical chance of a misfire going off for some time after the initial strike. Because the primer is made of a malleable metal then, having been deformed, it could creep due to the stress caused by the strike. This may cause friction between two primer crystals which may ignite the charge.

For this reason it's best not to put them into a trouser pocket
