kiffy
hi guys, ive just bought myself a .410 and know nothing about cartridge choice for it.. i have never fired one or been in the company of one being fired (ive led a sheltered life!) so wondered what you guys use and reccomend apart from it being yet another toy which i couldnt help myself over one of my reasons for buying it is being able to shoot vermin and pigeons closer to the farm house on one of my perms... to be fair i could sit on the picnic bench outside his kitchen window with my 12 bore and he wouldnt care but its not something id do.. so im wondering even though my 410's not moderated as i couldnt be doing with a gun that long would it still be worth my buying subs to user in it? and would it be worth me getting some 3" magnums as well? i supose what im really getting at is whats the sound difference between a .410 sub or magnum in an unmoderated 410 compared to my 12 bore 32g gamebore clear pigeon carts? robbiep
First off, is it a 3" chamber ? .410s are usually 2.5" or 3", and subsonics are only available in 3" cartridges, unless you want to load your own. Next question, does the farmer only want fibre wads being used, or is plaswad OK too ? Fibre, you're stuck with Eley, everyone else only does plastic. Regarding noise, an unmoderated .410 with a normal cartridge is still a lot quieter than a 12 bore. Go to subs, and it's quieter still. However, you'd be far better standing 20 yards off to the side when someone else shoots it to really tell, it can be quite difficult to hear the difference when you're the one firing the gun. kiffy
its a 3" and this farmer in question doesnt mind plastic... reading your post was one of those DOH! moments when i thought why the ffff didnt i say that in my original post.. in my defence i was up at 3am yesterday to go fowling and have been up most of the night as im sick as a pig... thats my poor excuse out of the way so subs are still quieter in an un moderated gun thats what i wanted to know.. i know they should be as their not going over the 1100fps but wanted to check
rem708
Just for the record Fiocchi GFL36 2.5" 11g 6's are fibre. Took a lot of hunting around their site to confirm
kent
I recommend you test what you get as regards patterning, the .410 is surprisingly effective though patterns from mine turn from great to being so open you could park your car in the centre in just a few extra feet. Hence I call 25 yards the maximum knowing if I am much further I am relying on a lucky strike. I use 3" 18 grm no6 Eley Fibre wad through a full choke, the gun is at its very best at around 15-20 yards when it will kill hares instantly and even at 10 yards it wont smash rabbits up. As for noise I shoot mine close to the house and shoot a fair bit of vermin out the kitchen window and the like without complaint ( I did that only the once with a 12 LOL). If they ask you to shoot round the house I suppose you will have no issue but remember if you have buildings around you it might not be loud inside them but the noise will bounce off them so wear hearing protection. I don't wear plugs with the .410 in the field or when its fired from the windows, it is not bad to my now damaged hearing
