TimeDrags
How much is the have a go session - I understood Helice was frighteningly expensive per bird ?
bakerboy
How much is the have a go session - I understood Helice was frighteningly expensive per bird ? £1.20 per target, you can have many or as few as you would like. You also have full use of the gun, so 2 shots per target if you need. It is a slow discipline therefore you will not burn up a lot of cartridges or targets, most competitions are only 20 targets (£24.00)

aris
Bakerboy - what is the difference between a 'have-a-go' day and regular helice practice days at the A1?
Penelope
The best artificial target going, loved shooting it. I've shot helice quite a few time down at Pat Lynch's (RIP) West Kent Shooting School back in the late 80's, early 90's. Only 20p dearer too, than all those years ago. bakerboy
Bakerboy - what is the difference between a 'have-a-go' day and regular helice practice days at the A1? Nothing, this has been asked for by those that shoot Helice for others to have ago perhaps when there is a little less "serious Practise" in progress when preparing for a selection shoot etc. The best artificial target going, loved shooting it. Herr Plinker
Hope you get a good turn out Terry as its great couple of hours sport and a real leveller. Work commitments mean I cannot come down but if you ever do another one at the weekend then definitely up for it.

bighit1985
Shame. I had to go on a course but I've seen this a few times at west kent ss. But they never had it running for practise, as the comps were run by Chris potter gun shop I believe. But hopefully make the one you organise next. Penelope
They used to practice on a Wednesday back in the early 90's. The investment bank that I used to work for and used to co organise the firms clay club held our twice yearly company on a Wednesday, so by chance got the opportunity to join in. I think a lot of the GB team were there. The 'Hurlingham' sbs ZZ completion was good fun too. Shame. I had to go on a course but I've seen this a few times at west kent ss. aris
Went down to the A1 today for this - Helice - wow - much too much fun. I shot 15/20 which I suppose isn't bad for my first time. Many thanks to Bakerboy for trapping, instruction, and the invite. At £1.20 a pop - yes it is expensive.. A full round is typically 20 birds (but you can do as few/many as you want), but it is very slow paced - so in the time I did the 20 Helice, I might have done 50-70 sporting. Certainly something i'll do again - just not often :-) What I like about Helice is that it is a trap discipline - but you don't have to have the same reflexes that you would with a traditional trap sport (we tried UT too - was rubbish at it - need more practice and work on technique). This is what you shoot: The white bit separates from the orange bit. You shoot the bird and the white bit falls off. It must fall off within the fenced area to count as a hit. The orange bit typically is destroyed, the white bit tends to survive.

bakerboy
Hi Aris Both you and Kieran shot really well , and it looked like you enjoyed yourselves. A Saturday "Have a Go at Helice Day" has now been confirmed it will be held on the 12th April at the A1. More details as soon as possible, it will be a 10.0'clock start and by then we close at 6.o'clock. I am trying to arrange a money off deal for Pigeon Watch members, only probably 20p off (£1.00 per target)( you could of course donate the 20p to the PW Charity), but every little helps, no promises as yet. If you are interested please say so on the thread but also PM me, if I get enough interest I will donate a Trophy for the PW Winner, rules and conditions can be agreed a little later. If you want to extend the day into an evening meal and maybe a beer or two nearby then I am sure there is someone on PW that will organise it.
