Gimlet
I've hit rabbits in the sinuses with a HMR and the result has been neatly pierced nasal bones, little energy transfer, little surrounding tissue damage and a rabbit very much alive albeit in shock. With air-rifles I always favour placing the pellet directly below the ear rather than between the ear and the eye. That transfers what little energy there is directly into the brain stem resulting in paralysis. They drop without a kick. Still need accurate placement though, but using the ear as an axis makes it easier to achieve.
kent
A Bit better than ask.com then! A £1 coin is 22.5mm and the cap of a 12 ga shell is 22.3mm, so I am thinking this is a maximum size to practice at however one of the best bits of advice I have ever received is your shots in practice are expected to be twice as good as those taken I the field. The user should make up his own mind on that but I suggest 12 ft lb airgun ranges should be a lot less than many think they are and the hunter should aquaint him/her self with were that brain is in the "head shot". The photos are great Colin and puts much perspective on the 50mm brain previously claimed. I like this stuff and find it anything but sick, its vital knowledge to those who actually care about doing things well. Well done!

figgy
When using sub 12ft lb air rifle unless the bunnies were close or all I could see was its ears and top of head I allways went for the heart shot. Little more room for error too.

kent
Interesting I did it with a goose brain a while back and posted it on here without the gore. It was a lot smaller One or two things we should consider. The brain can be destroyed by breaking the bones around it that act as secondary projectiles ( if the energy is sufficient. 22 lr subs well capable) Hit lightly with low levels of power I have seen exposed brain matter and a non dead bunny ( sub 12 ft lb air) That said stuff happens and I once wounded a rabbit with a head shot that removed the jaw section with about 700 ft lb when I shot at short range on the lamp with. 22 hornet Brain shots don't always work we need to stop brain function certain areas have certain jobs but brain wounds will generally stop your quarry in its tracks by creating paralysis
