I'm looking to buy my first gun and wouldn't mind some advice from more experienced shooters, I will be mainly shooting clays to start with but will also be shooting game (I am in the process of training a 13 week old wirehaired Visla puppy as a gundog) I have a budget of £400-£600 and would like something to get me started but will last me until i'm ready to move on.

I would advise a Lincoln shotgun of some sort, very good shotguns. But May be slightly above your budget,

Or have a look for a second hand rizzini e or b shotgun, very nice guns and nicely in your budget.

Buy yourself a multi choke over and under . You will then have a gun that you can use for field shooting and for clays . £500 will buy you a nice second hand gun . Don't worry to much about fit ,as any gun can be altered to fit you . Don't buy a gun that is miles to short for you but don't worry about a gun that is to long . Consentrate on buying the gun you fancy at the price you can offord . Guns are made to average sizes , which means they don't fit anybody but nearly fit most . Any gun can be altered to fit you at not to much money . Never buy a gun that needs the stock extended , they look ugly and will bring the price down . Good luck .

Plenty of choice look at Lanber, browning medalist (FIAS), Winchester, Miroku. I would advise looking for a used gun and try before you buy worth having some lessons to get a good grounding in technique and what fits/feels right.

The gun shop Rugby isnt too far from you and have a decent choice also Barby sporting do lessons

I shouldn't be over fussed about a multi choke personally (they tend to sell for more for one thing) There isn't much you cant shoot at with 1/4 and 1/2 fitted. Going to be controversial here and say Consider a Baikel o/u for less than your budget, spend the rest on shells and lessons, these guns are hard to break and cheap to buy. Ok you might not feel quite right turning up to a posh day with one but those days are not around yet and its always good to have a cheap gun for those mucky wet days on vermin and fowl. Bought at under £300 possibly less than £200 second hand you wont loose anything when you sell if you do, I should check whatever you buy fits something like though as fitting and re-finishing isn't cheap and adds nothing to the resale of a cheap gun if it fits you.
