Automatic Drinker Systems

Recommended Posts

Looking for a bit of help/guidance here please Gents.

I am thinking of setting up the above system, but only on a small scale. Has anyone got any pictures or knowledge of their own systems to give me a few ideas as to where to start on the project? I know i will need a header tank, various fittings, taps, ballcocks and then the drinkers, but has anyone found problems with their system and then found better ways to do things?

Also, best bits of kit available from best suppliers etc?

All advice is much appreciated, but please don't just post about how bad you think they are.

Thanks in advance,

QS

We use these

Couldn't be more simple, we used a large plastic drum as a header tank at the highest part of the pen, then just ran 25mm alkathene pipe from the drum to the feeders, then fit the clamps (supplied) on the the alkathene pipe.

We filled the Plastic drum/barrel up manually every night with a hose pipe, just remember to drill on hole near the lid to stop it sucking the drum in.

If you have loads of water hangers then you need to use more drums as header tanks, have had no problems at all. Just remember to bring them in before the frosts.

We have been using these for 5 or 6 seasons:

This season I am planning to change over to these:

The bell type drinkers work well and are easy to use, but I find the poults manage to **** in them, which doesn't help with disease.

We don't have mains water near any of our pens so we use 1,000 ltr IBC tanks and run the 8mm drinker pipe straight off these.

Very similar but beware to keep the header tank covered or leaves etc will get in and block the valves at the drinker end, necessitating dismantling to clean. Watch for sufficient 'head' as the energy losses in pipes from a header tank can make re-filling slow especially if you use normal hosepipe. Also. if you use guttering, cover the gutter with a piece of wood 6 " above the gutter and about 6-7" wide, stops them pooing in it.

Yep try to site drinkers away from perching roosting areas, two posts knocked in the floor and a piece of straining wire between and then hang the drinker from the wire, again to stop the birds dumping in the drinkers, virkon s run with the water at the recommended dose keeps it all clean and saves on algae or bacterial build up, if you using an ibc paint it black or cover it to stop the sunlight growing algae, fit the end of the blue pipe with a tap so that the line can be flushed and if medication is needed it can be bled through easy

For info the ones quoted are an inferior copy of the original Plasson design at not much less money.

Plasson use top quality plastics, do not go brittle over time and have full spares availability down to the smallest o ring.

....Buy cheap buy twice!
