Reluctant retrieve on game

Guys, guys!! Lol. Right, my dog wouldn't pick up feather to begin with. Firstly do we know how old the dog in question is? Apologies if it's been said, i might have missed it. I nearly gave up on mine but i think i put too much pressure on mine too soon (she's sensitive - ish) and now she'll pick anything!

Its difficult to get a full story on a forum. In deed some often seem to intentionally withhold important bits, does chronological age really matter? Not entirely sure it does I know the Americans are keen on wings and things from very much puppy stage (right or wrong, I don't care to comment on that one). I have seen footage of a Tiny Chessie puppy retrieving a dead duck from water and this was a UK bred and trained dog, the owner claimed it was not done entirely intentionally I hasten to add and he is a forum member. Stage not age I think is most relevant after all a four year old might be quite shocked if the first pheasant in encountered in it entire life he was asked to pick up and fetch after nothing but canvass bags filled with sawdust ,heck I have met people who wash their dog dummies! Such types might be horrified to see mine, with dried wings, goose feathers and air dried pelts glued to them

Me I don't make a big thing over dead stuff, dogs living here with me see it and encounter it all the time so it don't come as any shock to them when I start them on Cold dead game (I can see it being more an issue for town dwellers or non-shooting gundog people). By far and away the worst thing I could do is freak out if a puppy picked up a dead rabbit or a duck wing that was being left to dry. Indeed most have spent a fair amount of time on their hind legs trying to reach up and investigate it as it hangs

I was asking age so try and ascertain if the dog had been rushed too young and hence lost some of its natural drive and enthusiasm. :)

Yeah, wasn't having a go but like I say depends on more than a number it more about exposure and methodology. Some and I tend to agree want a good solid retrieve before going on to cold game, others are less ridged have a look on some of the USA footage from some respected guys

Has the point of the thread been forgotten or lost? The dog shows no interest in picking game. The "respected guys" from whatever country are likely doing their early training with dogs that are enthusiastic about retrieving ( or having a go to retrieve), all kinds of stuff. This dog, for reasons unknown, is a reluctant picker up of game.

Young dogs using tried and tested methods, be it this country or any other country, do pick game if bred and trained accordingly. Something is missing or has gone adrift in this dogs case.
