Suzy,

Having8 or 9 dogs I can not have every body in the house at once. 2 of them, Bitch and Coal, live in with us on a daily basis while the others rotate time between the kennels and the house. No the kennels are not heated but my inside kennels are in their own building, and are shared with three ponies during the winter. It needs to get to about -20 outside before the water will ice up.

I do find that the dogs are always calmer and more responsive after they have had time inside.

My Springer lives in her kennel during the day when we are at work. She also sleeps in it at night when we go to bed. Apart from that, we have her in the house.

I have a small heater in the kennel which I switch on during the colder months. It is only an anti- frost heater, the sort used in green houses. :)

Hi Dan,

One guy I know will not leave his dogs into the house under any circumstances and keeps them kennelled all the time, the only time they are left out is when they are brought out for exercise, he won't even leave his kids play with the dogs, they are for hunting and thats it, and it seems to work for him he has two excellent springers.

Do you see any benefit in doing this? not that I'm thinking of doing it myself, my dogs are in the house as much as I am, but they sleep outside and are kept outside during the day. Just want to get your opinion.

Thanks

Rich

A dog will learn to live with his circumstances whether they be straight kennel, house and kennel, or house. And most dogs will handle the amount of attention allowed them. Some dont care how much they get others want it all the time, this comes down to the indivdual animal. However to me someone who keeps the dog kenneled all of the time is missing out on alot of what the dog has to offer....companionship, affection, :) and everything else, like dog hair in your coffee and dinner and rug and close :lol::lol: .

Personally I believe a dog should be allowed to interact with the family they offer so much to all members and ask for so little in return  Yes they may pick up some bad habits but these are kept in check by our time training and out together. To me life is not complete without a couple of dogs running around getting in the way.

all 4 of our newfoundlands live in the kitchen, but the back door is normally open if one of us is in.

well, apart from when its bloody freezing, or the rain is coming through the back door horizontally (grrr i HATE british weather :) ).

they can get access to the rest of the house if we let them through a series of gates/doors. big black hairy slobbery beasts are not ideally left to their own devices without the presence of a two-foot.

but next place we get (when i win the lotto because currently it has at least 1000 acres  ), is going to have kennels. however i'm not sure about the oldies. two of them are getting on a bit and i noticed are feeling the cold more and prefering to lie on beds rather than the cold floor. so don't know whether i could go through with kenneling them with heating, or letting those two live inside.
