Live primer removal

Recommended Posts

i de prime all the time. never a problem.

few ways of doing things.

lee decapping die and it pops the primers out. re use the primers

lee neck sizing die. this will pop the primer out before the neck gets crimped in. reuse the primers

any of the lee dies use a roller bearing for the pin. i just pull the pin out of the rod and resize.

Well, after years of never having a primer go off while removing them .............

A friend asked if I could clean some 30 Carbine cases for him, what he forgot to mention was that they were badly corroded and still had live primers in !!.

Most were pretty easy to remove using the Lee de-capping die and came out OK but about 15 of them really took some force to get out and of course went off with varying degrees of noise.

I'd shielded around the press to prevent any debris flying around the room and was of course wearing eye protection but it still wasn't a pleasant experience!.

Strangely one of my cats was sleeping nearby and never flickered, slept through the whole thing!.

And to cap it off (no pun intended!) while forcing out the last one my decapping pin snapped, turned out the last case was Berdan primed :(

After a nice cup of tea I popped the cases in the stainless steel pins tumbler for about 90 mins and you can see the before and after results below.

I can't quite see why you are so set on replacing the brass just because it isn't sized fully yet. As stated remove decap rod and adjust die to fully resize. ANYWAY if you have only previously been neck sizing and they fitted the chamber then why wont these partialy resized ones go in ? the partially resized ones must be smaller than a neck sized one even if they are not fully resized. Unless they have come from another chamber or you have crumpled the neck or shoulder. Something doesn't sound quite tickety boo here.

I've fixed the problem now anyway and resized them with the full length sizer again, they now fit in the chamber and bolt closes easily, I have no idea why they was so tight in my chamber before, but whatever I did change this time re sizing has worked, thanks for the help guys
