nderfel
hi all, When gutting the rabbits I shot this morning I noticed one had pus filled lumped and legions on its liver, I binned the rabbit but does anyone know what this is or would the bunny have been safe to eat? Thanks Nick Edited June 24, 2014 by nderfel
corkycorksta
Coccidiosis: Eimeria stiedae is a parasite that can affect the liver of rabbits. This is a common disease in young rabbits. Coccidia may cause depression, diarrhea, weight loss, distension of the belly, and death. Diagnosis can be made by fecal examination but fecal can be negative because oocyites are shed intermittently. In severe cases where severe liver damage has occurred (the parasite can create yellowish-white nodular abscess-like lesions in the liver. Look anything like this ? Wouldn't eat the rabbit if I were you.
Zapp
I steer clear of anything with abnormalities in the organs.
nderfel
That was exactly it, cheers Corky. I chucked him in the bin Zapp, a shame but hopefully I did the little fella favour and put him out of his misery
Uncle Albert
On my permission most of the young ones have this. They do get over it if they are not too heavily infected apparently, but it is not exactly appetising looking.
