scotslad
This is a bit of a strange 1, been mulling it over for a wee while now so thought would open it up to the knowledgable on PW On my wee shoot there are high numbers of Fallow deer so all hoppers have to be well fenced in the easiest way we have found is by using pallets round each hopper. This makes the hoppers fairly hard to see, i think i'm right in saying that birds/pheasants rely on sight far more than other senses when looking for food (so if ur hopper feeding them into a drive u keep moving them so they can always see the next 1 etc) Do u think if i tied feed bag flags above the pen hoppers and then done the same on the rest of the hoppers it would encourage birds and make it easier for them to move between hoppers? Worried that the flapping may put birds off? Possibly add flags after the first week so not to spook birds intially? Suppose no different to having flags there to scare of predators? PS I do put spice in some hoppers (usually every 2nd one) not convinced it really makes much difference but for the little extra it costs if it holds any extra its worth it Cheers
RED BEARD
What about painting the pallets, os stappling the feed bags to the pallets to stop them flapping.
Arley
We hand feed bags in the pen to deter predators and haven't had any problems.
scotslad
Do u think i'm over thinking it? Never really had a problem but just trying to improve things and mak it as easy as possible for the birds. The painting would work, but just looking for something really easy and cheap Thats wot i was thinking Arley, did 1 feed company not have eyes on the back off there bags, althou do u hang them directlty above hoppers? Thought if i leave them off the first week just in case Must admit we tried kiddies beach windmily things last year on the pens and seemed to work well, quite refelective and loads of movement even in a small breeze
Arley
That's right they were designed to deter birds of prey. We put the bags up when we release the birds. That and a combination of hanging up CDs, foil takeaway boxes and leaving a couple of radios playing in the pen seem to work for us?
dodeer
I personally wouldn't bother. As long as the birds can get to the hoppers ok with the pallets round it then sounds like they'll be ok.
