Mightymariner
Had a nice afternoon on a flightline yesterday, with fellow PW member Caddyman. We had scouted plenty of land, around here only barley has been harvested though some rape has been swathed. The most birds were on some swathed rape adjecent to land we shoot, but not ours. However, a connection was made and permission granted. Caddyman set up on the rape while I set up in a bale hide in the middle of the barley stubbles. He was shooting before I had set up with the occasional pop heard from his direction. Though because of the position he was in, shooting was tricky as the birds were swooping over the hedge past his hide, and bypassing him a bit. I had little shooting till I set the flapper going, and then managed a couple of crossers and a crow. However, nothing decoyed in and most seemed wary of the hide. There was a great flightline across the field, heading towards the boundary where Caddyman was, so after an hour or so, I moved with my back to the hedge, facing the flightline and wind at my back. Almost immediately things improved and I had plenty of shooting, mostly birds crossing the fields but drawn in closer by my decoys and flapper. Things had died off for Caddyman so he moved and set up 100 yards to my left on the same hedge, so he could intercept birds on the same flightline. He got some shooting, but it wasn't easy because of the trees (that's what he told me anyway!). As the afternoon progressed and my decoy pattern grew, I got more and more action. And eventually birds actually decoyed in. Had some enjoyable shots and missed some very easy ones too, and had a couple which did a flip in mid air, apparently hit but flew on. But did manage to pull down a few high ones to give the chaps baling in the next field a show (haha, sure they were watching!). Picked 53, lost six or so in the hedge, all delivered to the game dealer on way home. And the best thing, fields were only five mins from home. Pix below. Mightymariner
Thanks, it was. Been quiet recently, the peas were a disappointment this year, only a couple of outings on them before harvested, and then we missed the best of the pea stubbles. Our best bag recently was 35 on a muck heap right next to one of the yards. Hoping for some good rape stubbles soon, though harvest not in full swing here at moment, just winter barley.
