Roe deer behaviour

I have been watching game crop for damage caused by deer quite a bit recently, as a result I see quite a few roe with young getting stuck into it.

As I approached some cover the other week I saw a roe doe wander out some way up the tarck in front of me, then a young fawn and what I thought was another.

Looking at then through my bins it was obvious the second follower was in fact a small muntjac.

As they aren't supposed to cohabit that well, I thought it was just coincidence, but I have now seen this threesome 4 or 5 times always together like one happy family.

I can only assume the muntjac has been orphaned, but it seems unusual (to me at least) for a roe to seemingly happily take on the role of mother?

I saw for the first time a few years ago a recently orphaned red calf try to join another family group, the hind kicked at the calf quite violently.

I sort of expected the same from this group but it seems not.

Just goes to show they don't read the same books as us :)
