marchwood
I'm thinking of trying to go up to Caerlaverock on the Solway for a couple of days wildfowling with a friend, if the permits haven't all gone for this season. We've not shot there before. Does anyone have any tips? And is there good - and understanding - B&B accommodation about, like a pub with rooms, in the area, where they don't mind guests leaving before dawn and coming back plastered with mud in time for breakfast? shakin stevens
Yeah the nith is spot on, does a late breakfast good kennels locked at night and doesn't mind shooting groups, permits are easy to get for the reserve it's never that booked full that you can't get in. marchwood
Great, thanks very much. I'll look it up. Sounds spot on. We're thinking about November/early December - would that be a good time, and I take it that morning flights are worth the effort?
Barls2-9-12
Can be a good time a lot depends on the weather and where the geese are roosting. Also look to see what the moon will be doing when you plan on going.
babka3487
+1 for the nith hotel. I've enjoyed Caerlaverock when I've been - watch out for the barnacles though as you will be being watched when on the reserve

Penelope
The Nith can organise an inland flight for you as well (well, they used to be able too). http://www.nithhotel.co.uk/ Edited August 26, 2014 by Penelope
birdsallpl
I used to stay at the farmers inn, not sure if they still operate as haven't been on that part of the firth for years. When I used to shoot that end it was so crowded with guns, shooting Caerlaverock was a nice place to go. Not so many bothered to go there so you never found another gun squashed next to you. Barneys used to be a pain there though and do mix in with the Pinks, or really I should say it the other way around there were far more Barneys with a few Pinks. I only go to take a farmer pal who is nearly 70 other than that I wouldn't shoot pinks inland, it's not easy to get in with Gordon he is always booked up , but it's good crack and a top guide .
