Highlander
Can anyone enlighten me on this…I can buy a Navara Aventura from our local dealership for around £20k. Brand new, pre registered off the forecourt with all the trimmings. VAT reclaimable. I can also buy a 'grey import’, same vehicle but from a direct source for around £15k/£16k. What’s the difference? Does it affect the insurance, warranty, resale, parts supply, maintenance etc etc? Anybody know?
Axe
The problem with Grey Imports is that they have to be registered before the import. That means that the warranty will be less than a year when you receive it. The length of warranty depends on how long the vehicle has been registered in its country of origin. The other problem you may have, is finding a dealer that will service it. We bought several Modeo's like this but never really had a problem with any of it. It also saved us over £30,000 on 4 cars. taxidermy dave
you can pick up an 04/05 for around 15k,i got an 04 22k on the clock, leather interior(sp),and a few extras, for 14k,well 12 plus the vat(damn the vat man). I wouldnt go for an import because a mate of mines had two of em and the pistons have gone in both within 2 months of the warrenty ending and cost a fortune to repair(obviously not saying this would happen in all the imports but.....).The only problem with navaras ive found aswell as the mitshibushi range is that you need an airport to turn around in,the lock is dreadfull on them(which is a bit embarrasing when theres people about makes it look like you cant drive!!!),apart from that i couldnt find any other faults with em! dave
SNAKEBITE
Another thing about imports is the parts. Many moons ago an aquaintance had an MX5 imported. He broke the windscreen and had to wait EIGHT months before one was shipped from Japan. Not saying it will always be like this but it is worth a bit of homework first. al4x
We're talking 2 types of Import here, one of Jap spec second hand cars like the MX5 above which is different to the buying of pre-registered vehicles here, these should have no parts problems or problems with dealers servicing them and indeed now you don't have to go to a dealer to keep the warranty valid. As said the warranty may be shorter but you can buy independant warrantys from someone like www.warrantydirect.co.uk for peace of mind. In my eyes do it we buy company vehicles this way and save a packet
