Floating Chamber
O.K. Those of you who know me personally are aware I load mainly 3" .410 with 16 gram of lead. However, I have more 21/2" than 3", so, I am thinking of shoving the 16 gram (or 15.5 gram, just in case) into the shorter case. Does anyone have any experience with loads of this type? rbrowning2
A few issues like which powder to use, which wad and RTO or star crimp. But I would think it would be possible with H110, imr4227 or SP3 and a mini-bior wad with RTO. Not very scientific but a few years back I used to used the little h17 wad with I think it was 1gm of SP3 and just filled the 2.1/2 case with shot and RTO I am sure it was about 16gm worked ok. Floating Chamber
Thanks for the response. I will be using a Clermont ball powder with a biodegradeable plastic obturator and a shortened fibre wad. Rolled turnover finish. I reckon the pressure will be ok. rbrowning2
A slow burning ball powder (double based?) should be perfect at that is what SP3 is and the powder charge then takes very little case space. The best .410 powders look to have their main use for small calibre rifles.

Floating Chamber
Ok SUCCESS! Reminder, I like 3" .410 loads but I am running out of 3" cases. I made up 25 on Friday night. 65mm Cheddite .410 case. I used 11.5 grains of a Clermont* variant ball powder; a Faye plastic obturator, with a card disc on top, followed by a cut-down cork filler wad. The card on top of the obturator rests on top of the obturator rim; it stops the filler wad sinking into the recess while spinning. I believe it acts like a pneumatic cushion on firing. Shot load was 15.8 grams of No. 9 finished with a card wad and rolled. They performed well....so did I! Good breaks. * Shame about the recent fire in Belgium that has held up production.
